The heart wood contains rays, they look like lines coming from the center straight out ( not rings) these rays can tell you if a tree was grown on a hill and what side of the tree the hill was on. If there are more rays on one side that's the side with the hill. The Heartwood is also where the tree stores its minerals and anti fungal stuff. The sapwood is wood that helps move fluids up and down the tree. There's a layer called the cambium layer, it is the living part of the tree and is where new growth mainly occurs. Hope you enjoyed the information, I like trees and I'm a Carpenter, the ray information abd rings helps with knowing what way the wood could warp.

You actually don't ever hit the log in the same spot-- That will waste time and energy-- The proper technique is to read the log, and work the crack along the edges, and work your way in-- esp with a big log--- In this short, she is going for the heartwood, but generally you work it along the edges, and work towards the middle--- While this log looks like pine, One would Never try to split a burr oak log in the middle like this--- When I "address" a log, I already know how many firewood sized pieces I will get out of it----

Hitting the log in the same spot is actually the Exact Wrong Way to split a big log--- You follow the hits in the log in a straight line thru the diameter of the log until it starts cracking-- You would work the edges first--- That's where and how you gauge accuracy--- You follow the cracks-- I've been hand splitting logs for over 30 years, and consider myself an expert at it--- This is a pine log-- If that log was a Burr oak log, or others, she'd be there all day pounding it in the same spot with the familiar Dead Thud------

You're amazing! I'm from Florida and we have special pines here, the best ones are in south Florida, that have heartwood that can be most of the width of the trunk in a large tree. Often you can see them standing in the savannas with chunks of bug eaten sapwood falling off of them. If you collect this heartwood, it's crystallized and amazing. It burns like gasoline but lasts a very long time. It is very sticky and very hard. I used to really be into the stuff when I was younger, and would seek it out on camping trips. I've broken two ax heads chopping it and saw a friend break one also. That's the head of the ax, the metal part, that broke on this wood. Also we have these oaks called live oaks that are really hard to split. I'd like to see you go after some of these. Sometimes the grain is almost braided and it's basically impossible. If you want a challenge, we've got it for you.

For people that are unfamiliar with tree biology, although I'm not an expert myself, most of the tree is dead wood. Dead in the sense that it no longer grows which would be all the tree's rings. The parts of the tree that's alive would be the inner bark. It's this inner bark where nutrients and water move up and down to nourish the tree's leaves and help it produce seeds or fruit. The inner wood of the tree is porous and it allows liquids and sap to move through it. The sap would act like an antifreeze in the winter and would replace any water in the trunk. Sap doesn't freeze in the extreme cold and would protect the tree and prevent it from exploding from expanding ice crystals

your forgetting the Sapwood. In many species, the Heartwood and Sapwood have about the same color, but in most tree species, the Heartwood stops transporting sap, and the extractives stop in the straw like cells, and they add color and or decay resistance. Walnut is a good example of a bold difference in color, and Red Mulberry is an excellent example of the Reddish color adding extreme rot resistance. Black Locust, Red Mulberry, and Orange Osage are the most rot resistant woods in North America, followed by the Redwoods and Cedars amongst many others.

Nice "Splitting Maul!" 😁 Great Form, too! If you strike a "Line" one Axe Width Deeper or Shallower each strike, also helps on those Monsters!

I used to split wood in that manner. 4 rotator cuff surgeries to repair damage (the last surgery was a reverse shoulder joint replacement/implant)... I no longer split wood. It was a most satisfying job as I considered the tree challenging me to split it. My surgeon told me he had professional ball players with less damage..

I guess I've been lucky--While I generally use a power splitter for the big, or knotty logs, I've been hand splitting wood for over 30 years now within my landscaping, and firewood business--- Now, my aching back is a different issue!!!!

This girl is more stronger than she looks, she is literally destroying big wood trunk with just 3-4 blows. Girl power ❤

Esta mujer sabe agarrar un hacha mejor que muchos hombres. No deslizan la mano por la madera del hacha. Congratulations!

But I bet there's a lot more men who know how to swing an axe than most skinny armed women.

Old school basics, use a sharp axe for soft wood and a dull axe for hardwood. Work smarter not harder. 😊

Good point!!! But she's using an 8lb splitting maul--- I just put an edge on my mauls with a file, but never sharpen it too much-----
