This all seems pretty histrionic - a guy does an open-hand slap on someone, no one is really hurt, and people want to lock him up? The same people who make excuses for Woody Allen and Roman Polanski? Everyone should get some perspective here - there is an on-going war in the Ukraine, 5 million people have died in an epidemic - and we are worried about people having a slap-fight? This was one step from hitting him with a purse.
Why was Will Smith allowed to return to his seat after physically assaulting someone?? If this was a fan that stormed the stage they would of been dragged off by security. Not the first time Hollywood has turned a blind eye to assaults.

As an inner-city teacher, the message this sends to young black men is devastating. Rock can't press charges or he's a wussy, Smith can commit assault and battery because he's defending his woman, men don't have to apologize to other men even when they are wrong, a man can't hit a woman but a man can hit a man, black men can't be expected to control their tempers, rich and powerful people never get consequences, someone's words justify physical violence, and more...

Words can be violent too. Words can be weapons. They inflict pain and damage. Sometimes deeper than physical attacks. You didn’t mention that. Why should there not be consequences for words as well as actions. Appropriate consequences. It’s ok to be cruel if it’s wrapped up in a joke ? In this case the action only occurred because of words spoken. Teach your students to be thoughtful and considerate with their words. Those throwing abuse don’t get to choose who is offended.

Good comedy is having the ability to make people laugh without having to humiliate or denigrate people who cannot help their circumstance. Insensitive, immature comedy roots around for cheap jokes at the expense of others.
