@@Aaron-zk6jn you don't need it if you are her, the point is not doing 50m without breathing (tough the others around her in this video we can see that needed it) the point is doing it making the world record, more intense is the effort more oxygen you burn. In practice when training in apnea probably every high level athlete can do it.
@Aaron-zk6jn

@@robertot69 I know what you're saying, as someone who swam at an elite level (not Olympic, but I trained with them) I experienced the same feeling. There is psychological component more than physical. A 50 no breath can feel brutal, but that oxygen isn't going to technically reach your muscles in enough time to make it worth taking.

2023 now and no other swimmer has been near this time. The former WR that she beats here 25.07 by Therese Alshammar (SWE) is still the best time set by other athletes. Sjöström herself has made 25.07 or faster at 22 other occasions since this race: 24.60 (2017) 24.69 (2015) 24.76 (2017) 24.79 (2019) 24.87 (2014) 24.89 (2023) 24.90 (2017) 24.95 (2017, 2022) 24.96 (2015, 2017, 2022) 24.98 (2014) 24.99 (2016) 25.02 (2017, 2019) 25.05 (2022) 25.06 (2015) 25.07 (2015, 2016, 2018, 2023)

It really is disappointing how this MONSTER swim by Sjostrom is perceived. I'm pretty sure a high caliber swimmer such as herself periodically takes part in drug testing. No success goes unnoticed by FINA and it is their job to make sure nothing illegal was involved in it. Now I agree that the drop was significant, her PB coming in was about 25.2. Though it seems plausible to me. A 50 is determined by the start, the surfacing and the finish, after all. She nailed those 3 and went the whole stretch without a single breath. Plus it's not like Sjostrom came out of nowhere. Everyone knows and expects her to perform, she got gold at 14 years in Euros back in '08 for god's sake.

Patrick Blais Chauvin The button you see being manually pressed by an official is a backup measure in case the electronic touchpad malfunctions. This time was officially accepted by FINA as the new women's 50m Butterfly (LCM) world record. I highly doubt it was "done manually , not technogicaly". I don't really see how stooping below civilised norms of conversation or the actual content of your comment are relevant to mine though.

Khaled Abdul Ghani, Hate to break this to you, but they are all using performance enhancing drugs. I say this with absolute certainty. The testing just ensures athletes are not using large doses of well known substances at the time of testing, nothing more. To think that someone is a totally clean athlete because they were successful as a junior is very, very naïve. It's amazing that some people have little idea on the extent of performance enhancing drug use in sport.

I saw an underwater video of her strokes elsewhere and noticed that she does not seem to fully extend her arms on recovery. I *think* this is her secret to much higher stroke rate. Combined with her rather "flat" body throughout the race and less bend on her knees when kicking, she is also reducing drag.

fopperer Carbon? Seriously? I hope you realise that every conceivable material which could be used for a swimsuit has carbon in it? All biological materials per definition have carbon in them. All plastics have carbon in them. Also, the price of something is relevant how? I fully expect the reason they are expensive is because they need to be tailor made to fit the individual swimmer perfectly.
@TheBradleyC4
10 жыл бұрын
aAlsn Absolutely correct about the carbon comments, but these suits are actually not tailor made. That's Arena's new "Carbon Pro 2" which is probably why there's confusion from fopperer here about that name holding any significance as to the material haha. The price is a little bit crazy, can't say I know anything about the costs to produce these suits but I imagine Arena is making a healthy profit. But to be fair they put money into the USA grand prix series and national team this year as headline sponsors, so they're putting at least some of that money back into the sport. Swimming's expensive, that's just how it is. Also, to fopperer, these suits are not even close to the advantage from body suits in 2009. This was an absolutely incredible swim, revolutionary to women's butterfly really. Hoping to see her chase Volmer's 100 record at Euro's later this year.

This is obviously the result of steroids. I'm a swimmer myself and you don't just take off .7 from the world record in a 50!! She was obviously disappointing in her performance from london so she decided to take some illegal substances. You don't see men taking off that much in a 50 world record and women normally stop improving in swimming after 17 so this is not physically possible and training can only help, so much this was definitely steroids or some other drug.
