Sardinia is so good for quiet summer holiday without over crowded cities and not much mass tourism. One can really escape in a crazy mad world. I have done so many hikes and long walks in crazy hot summer there. It’s another world.

The two islands are historically and demographically at the antipodes. On the one hand, there is Sicily, which has always been an island at the center of all historical events in the Mediterranean (an aspect that is reflected in the quantity and quality of historical monuments), highly populated and always projected toward the sea, so much so that most of the population has always lived in seaside cities. On the other side is Sardinia, which has always been an island with little population, which for most of its history (except for the last 50 years with the development of tourism) has lived within the island: with the exception of Cagliari all coastal towns (including Alghero, Olbia, Bosa, Tortolì etc.) were before the 1970s small villages.

Most places in Sardinia you would need a car. But you can probably take a bus to the town of Cala Gonone where you could stay and then take a boat tour or rent a boat to explore the gulf of Orosei. In general, a car makes it a lot easier.

Some Irrelevant facts about Sicily: Sicily has the most crazy groups of islands in the mediterranean (Egadi Islands, Eolie Islands, Pantelleria, Lampedusa, Ustica), the biggest marine protected area in Europe, 7 Unesco Sites, the biggest Archelogical Area in Europe including the Valley of the Temples , 2 Vulcanos, the biggest active Vulcano in Europe "Etna" and the Vulcano of "Stromboli", 72 Natural reserves, Mountains (Peloritani, Nebrodi, Madonie), 6 Lakes, one of the most complex, rich and heterogenous cultural heritages in the world contaminated through centuries (Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Angevins, Spanish etc...), different original dialects inside its areas inspired by these contaminations, its been the hearth of Magna Grecia, home of inventors, philosophers, poets. You can like a place or not but this is it. Sicilians and Sardinians share the dramatic and unique feeling of belonging to an Island, something hard to explain. This is probably why they tend to feel like "brothers". Sardinia's natural beauty its unbelievable, just beyond imagination. Goethe after visiting Sicily wrote: "Italy without Sicily leaves no image in the spirit: this is where the key to everything lies"
