During the celebration festivities of Sarita Colonia - the saint rejected by the Catholic Church for taking in criminals, prostitutes, transvestites and homosexuals, among her many followers - a truce is proclaimed, a time when all her devotees live in brotherhood. In front of her mausoleum, food and gifts are shared for free while rivalries and hatred are left aside. When the party is over, out of the cemetery, that prejudice reigns over her followers again.
SARITA COLONIA
She was born in Huaraz, in the Andes of Peru, on March 1, 1914. She and her family emigrated to Lima when she was a child, searching for a brighter future. After a rough life, she dies on December 20, 1940 at the young age of 26. Her character solidifies in the seventies with the migration waves from the Andes to the capital, Lima, and the worship and celebrations that coincide with her birthday and day of her death strengthen considerably.
During this celebrations, and in commemoration of her solidarity, those devotees who have been conceded a miracle or a grace, bring food and share with others, in a sort of fair where rivals lay down arms and moral categories fade away.
You may, for instance, see transvestites handing out fruit and mothers encouraging their kids to approach them, something that would not normally happen outside of this festivity.
Criminals and gangs leave the crime and hate outside the party because they all feel they are ‘brothers in Sarita’.
The Catholic Church opposes this worship considering unacceptable, not only because of the cult that follows Sarita, but also due to the legend stating that she can be asked for miracles that are at odds with the Catholic faith; for example, that a burglary turns out successful, that the police doesn’t find them, good aim to kill the enemy, that the prostitutes’ clients don’t kill them or overall protection for any criminal activity.
According to her followers, Sarita doesn’t discriminate or reject anybody and offers her love and protection without caring who this person is, paradoxically affirming the Christian utopia in her cult.
