If you are interested in Sashiko (or Japanese hand-stitching), you may have heard the word “Unshin (運針)”. This is a word for the “Movement of Needle”, and it explains the form of running stitch in Japanese culture.
As Sashiko has many “origins”, Unshin also has several forms. The most famous one is from Wasai (和裁), and we can learn it from specific school. However, it doesn’t mean that “Unshin” is only for Wasai (和裁). As an ordinary Japanese person practiced their own hand-stitching in their home in their local village, there were many kinds of Unshin forms. Unshin from our tradition is one of those. Sashiko’s Unshin - that I teach in my Online Sashiko Class as well as in-person workshops.
I am nowhere close to teaching “Unshin in Wasai”. Please find a good teacher for your learning. In this video, I would like to share how “different” these 2 Unshins can be. It is not about right or wrong, good or bad, or better or worse. It is just different, and I respect both of Unshin.
The transcript of the video will be available accordingly on upcyclestitches.com
