Very interesting. I've been observing that external USB cards run a lot nicer if they have a Molex power connector behind them Vs board power by itself. It however also introduces instability at high clock speeds. Perhaps ground impedance is the issue. There are cards that have both SATA and molex connectors at the same time - I wonder if you can supply both at once for the lowest impedance possible?

Okay, so I’ve looked all around on google and it’s being a pain because people say not to use molex connecters. However, for some reason my sata hdd’s will NOT boot up if I have a regular 15 pin sata power cable, but WILL boot if it’s connected to a molex to sata adapter power cable. Why is this? It has done this to two PC’s now and I don’t understand why. You’d think it should just work with the normal cable that comes with the modular psu but it won’t work for some God forsaken reason and it’s annoying the hell out of me because no one has an answer, or at least no search results yielded one.

Hey, I've been looking around for an answer but I cant find it anywhere, I heard stories about molex sata power cables and extenders melting hard drives, and I wanted to know if a sata power cable y splitter would be safe compared to a molex one.
@MaxsTech
5 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna say those are prob just stories. For one, theres not nearly enough power going through molex or sata to melt anything. And if somehow someone's drive did get fried it was prob due to a faulty power supply. I still would not recommend splitting power between hard drives, to make sure each drive receives enough power.
@MaxsTech
5 жыл бұрын
Splitters are best used for fans only or maybe led lights. I wouldnt use them for any components as I've done that before (for a graphics card) and ran into issues where my system would shutdown or the screen would black out. My card wasnt recieving enough power since splitters merely share the power and dont duplicate it.
@NamxZero
5 жыл бұрын
@@MaxsTech thank you so much! I was mostly going to use these splitters due to a problem I have with my new PC's case, I have three 2.5 drives, two ssds and one hard drive and the slots to place them in my case (nzxt s340) dont have space for the cables to come in from a clean 90 degrees you know? Like theres too much flat panel under where the cables plug in and I cant find any official wires for my modular psu that are flat and would work for it, the data data cables are fine but all my power cables are 90 degrees and are kinda having pressure put on them case I had to squeeze them into the drives
@NamxZero
5 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if there was a wire for my modular psu or otherwise you could recommend that has sata power that isnt 90 degrees on it?
@MaxsTech
5 жыл бұрын
@@NamxZeroI would look up your power supply and see if the brand sells other types of cables since your p/s is modular. Otherwise if its an ssd it can be mounted basically anywhere since there are no moving parts, you could literally shove it anywhere, in any orientation. The 2.5 drives would be best used in the cases slots. I would look into perhaps getting a new single drive to replace those 3 though unless they are all already large drives.

I wouldn't use a splitter since you would end up having multiple fans drawing power already from that, and would likely overload that one sata split. A molex power source would probably work fine. I don't have experience with the commander pro though

I'm confused. There's the molex to Sata cable using 4 wires and has only 5v & 12v and then there is the "actual" Sata power cable which has 15pins and has the additional 3.3v. Huh? Doesn't both Sata power cable have 15 pins? In the "actual" sata power cable, I only see 5 wires going to the connector. On one cable you talk about 4 wires and 2 voltages and you compare it to the "actual" sata power cable but you talk about it in terms of the number of pins on the connector (not wires) and 3 voltages. Now, I got more questions then answers. Can they both be used to power a Sata drive? lol Btw, I'm trying to figure out how to measure the voltages from a Sata power cable, but the connectors are so narrow and hard to get to the pins. Anyone?

Molex to SATA cables can cause problems with SSD's like the Samsung 840 and 850 Pro If you try to wipe the drive with Samsung's bootable drive wiping utility, you may find that the drive is Locked and cannot be wiped even after disconnecting power to the drive for 10 seconds and restarting the utility as Samsung recommends If you plug the SSD directly into a Real Sata Power Cable from the power supply, this problem will instantly disappear and you can now wipe the drive

The cables are not the same electrically. The SSD is made to use the pins of the true sata cable. The converter cable is not doing the same thing an actual sata does. He explained what I'm saying in the video. The ground and redundant features of sata vs molex. You are using an old tech and that drive won't support it.
