Satabhaya panchayat used to be cluster of seven villages in the Kendrapara district of coastal Odisha. In the last three decades rampant coastal erosion has swallowed not only the villages but also its agricultural fields, schools, temples. Now, on the google map Satabhaya appears inside the sea.
According to the IPCC's (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) special report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, India has already warmed by 1.2°C. The 1.2°C rise has already severely affected the climate. The impact will be significant with a 1.5°C
increase and will be catastrophic for farmers and coastal communities with a 2°C rise. This would result in higher sea level rise, more frequent cyclones, floods and further accelerate the rate of erosion. This will make thousands of people living on the Indian coast climate refugees.
