Harry was lowkey manipulative and no one really notices cause he hides it well. From not telling her in the beginning she’d have to be a jew, to him not paying attention to her when she cooked, to the teabags around naked, to the ajlt series where he basically implies charlotte is his property and shouldn’t be anywhere but home when she finally finds her identity and starts working again. I think, regardless of whether or not Richard never intended to cheat again, Samantha was not interested in worrying about whether or not he was going to. He did. Nothing he does going forward can erase that fact. But Samantha, from day one, has made it very clear that she puts herself first. People misconstrue this statement for a selfish one but really it’s Samantha living her most authentic, true self. She puts herself first when her friends struggle to accept her lesbian relationship, when Carrie shames her for performing a sexual act in her own office, when she decides to leave Richard, and she puts herself first when she realizes she’s losing herself in Smith. Samantha was the most REAL character on SATC. A true feminist icon.

Love these videos. I actually watched SATC as it was airing brand-new on HBO. I was in high school during this season. My mom & I would watch the episode together in her bedroom, and we would have intense discussions & breakdowns of the episode. It was an amazing bonding experience. It has been fun revisiting the seasons in a critical manner. Part of Carrie's appeal is that she was VERY much a "woman of today/tomorrow." Her character has aged the worst. Miranda was always cool, but no one wanted to be her back then. But now, she was the most modern character. Thank you for these videos. They mean a lot to me.

The question for Samantha isn’t whether Richard will cheat again, it’s that she doesn’t want to live with the stress of it. And maybe she’s more of a realist, seeing things that Aiden couldn’t. That she knew who Richard was when she got together with him and the energy to keep him monogamous wasn’t worth it to her anymore. Samantha puts herself first, but never at the expense of others. It’s what makes her such a caring, self-loving role model - even at her craziest :)

I'm rewatching Season 5 right now for probably the billionth time. Something new I'm noticing is how much Samantha punishes Richard for cheating and is rewarded by viewers for it, but then Carrie repeatedly told Aidan when she cheated that he can't keep punishing her for past behavior. I get that Samantha is hurt, but punishing your partner after getting back together means you're not ready to get back together.

About how much they mention age: I think they have always done this (especially during the season where Carrie turns 35 and has “no special guy to share it with”) but once you hit a certain point in your 30’s you do start thinking about it a bit more and start changing habits that no longer suit you (maybe this is the reason behind all the “I no longer dress like that” line). I am currently 36 and I know me and most of my friends closer to my age are going through that process so while I am not saying we all do this it seems to be pretty common.

I don't think Richard was going to cheat but it was a wise move for Samantha. I did like them together. Carrie was aweful this season. In the Atlantic City episode she was a total bad friend. I mean I know she has a million bad friend moments but she severed ick the entire season. She was never a good wing woman and she was super s3x negative which is ironic because she was a s3x columnist. It's weird they always made her seem like she was modest but she picked and choose and shamed her friends. Like Samantha blowie and Charlotte showing her nip to the navy man. Samantha uplifted everyone and it would have been nice to see carrie do it as well. Thank you for these videos :)

Kierra, do you think Big was in some way embarrassed by Carrie? I’m on a rewatch right now and caught myself on that thought, like he married Natasha so fast, had public engagement announcement, wedding, and they seemed be out a lot on social gatherings while dating, but with Carrie he was kind of hiding? He also seems to be into tall brunette women, more “old money” fashion, while Carrie is petite blonde with more flashy, trendy style. Would love a video on that!

She was NOTHING like the other girls he sought after, you’re right, everything you said was factual that’s where I can’t get down with Big but I mean on the other hand he did tell her but his reasoning wasn’t truthful because it wasn’t that he just “wasn’t a relationship guy” bc he was married before and again like you said he got married after. Listen the fashions are either serving or lacking and there is no inbetween. As a teen watching the show I was in my Miranda era, I wanted to be a Charlotte but it wasn’t me. Even as a young person I knew Carrie was irresponsible and just a trash person in general, Samantha was so out of reach for me in so many ways. Now as a woman going on 36 I am in my Samantha era, she was the best friend on the show when you break it down. Her style was in your face, sexy, powerful, yet still lady like which I very much resonate with. She had the confidence I aspire to have and wasn’t afraid to speak her truth regardless of what others thought. Also there is absolutely nothing wrong with her being sexually free, people get it very misconstrued that you can own your sexuality 100% and still be monogamous. Samantha is goals and that is the hill I will die on. I wish Samantha got a spin-off imagine Samantha in London, living luxuriously❤❤❤

I do not think it is that important for us to know if Richard was about to cheat or not. It was more about Samantha and her trust in him, the trust that was broken that time he cheated on her and Samantha not being able to fully trust him ever again. From my point of view, it was more about finding her peace and leaving the man and the situation that made her doubt everything.

One thing that modern audiences fail to appreciate about SATC is that it should now be considered a *_period piece_*. That may sound hurtful to millennials & older who grew up watching this in their teens or younger adulthood BUT. Although it hasn't been a century since this was filmed (only 2 decades) society has shifted so much in its cultural and moral values that the show NEEDS to be understood in its historical context. I was an adolescent during the 2000s and as a result of my lived experiences as a black woman, was just coming into my political consciousness. I will tell you this: The socio-political realities of the 80s - 2000s were exactly *_why_* feminist, queer and racial-equality critique levelled up during the later 2010s and 2020s. Y'know stuff the public is still struggling to understand like intersectionality, some women being active participants in upholding the patriarchy; respectability politics for women and POC, the gentle and insidious racism of "liberal" white people; the shallow understanding of LGBTQ+ identities outside of what made us laugh on Will & Grace??? Yeah. To pick one example: It's the way that the Fab Four in SATC, nor anyone on the writitng or production team, would have considered themselves racist because to *_them_* ; not being a KKK member was proof enough. Having the "generosity" to show black characters as 1-dimensional background SIMS was *revolutionary* because: they genuinely enjoyed/marvelled at the parts of African-American people that seemed fun, passionate, alive. That enjoyment of black people as entertainment was frequently mistaken as genuine love & admiration of black people the way some fetishists often think putting their fetish object on a pedestal (if its a person) is not dehumanising in its own way. See the veneration of East Asian women by some Western men, and black men/women by some white people. Why? Precisely because that admiration WAS a far cry from the deep, deep degradation & disgust by white communities towards other POC during the 50s-70s (& earlier), it _felt_ to progressive white people like enough growth had happened. Tremendous growth, even. And yes, this immature understanding led to what you correctly ID-ed as hurtful, one-dimensional media portrayals that revealed they didn't see us with a lot of humanity yet. And *_this_* is what lead to the petulant resistance in the last 10 years of "but I have a black friend!" "Why can't both sides just agree to get along?"; "I don't see colour". That pushback was hurtful to us but it was genuinely *_baffling_* to them to look at it any other way. Same for the sexuality-shaming stuff exhibited in various ways by the Fab Four. The ways in which Carrie and Charlotte used to operate were the *_majority_* opinion of what was then considered people who were between moderate/centrist and progressive. Not conservative. They were waaayyyy worse. WORSE. They were what Andrew Tate et al is spewing now. SATC opinion used to be the mainstream "New York liberal / enlightened modern woman" view. Y'see what I mean? The reason the show felt comfy in making Samantha the butt of jokes or have her friends be disappointingly unsupportive or judgemental is because that was again, the standard mode back then before people starting accepting sex-positivity; unwinding "respectability" for women. Believe me. There was a reason our mothers & grandmothers absolutely struggled understanding our perspectives post-2015 and kept asking why we were "rocking the boat" and being "anti-men". They'd fought so hard through dire, horrific sexism of their generation that all the insidious shit felt ... I dunno, it's like escaping a sadistic abuser who used to punch you repeatedly, and cause you don't know any better the silent, psychological abuse of the next man seems like a cake-walk in comparison. I understand the damage they went through and all the ways the scars still linger, but still. I think it's important that we see SATC as a time capsule of where we were, what we were capable of and just how far we've come. Hope this helps anyone who still enjoys SATC but gets frustrated by its shortcomings.

Was that literally Stars Hollow in the Eddie Murphy flick? Samantha was the best friend in that series. I miss her so much in AJLT.

I hated how after they showed some layers with Kendall (Miranda’s new mom neighbor) and showing them connecting over motherhood, they left her as a one-off character instead of adding her to the show, which would’ve felt very natural and given some nice depth.

I love your videos! But I gotta say if you got rid of all the flaws in these characters, like the whole story line of thinking that guy was gay and then the girls being surprised he gets married you wouldn't have a story. We all make presumptions about people and it can be funny when we are proven wrong. And of all the presumptions that could be made this is the least malicious. Also, with the black neighbor being upset that Miranda's baby is crying, I think being mad ia a normal reaction from anyone living in the city. Why are you assuming it is racist? She probably assumed Miranda was just not handling it bc she's irresponsible and then she comes to realize she's just overwhelmed. It's a great little subplot in the story that makes the characters very human. My overall point is, is that your criticisms usually stem from why aren't the characters perfect. If the characters were squeaky clean in everything they do the show would be absolutely boring and unrealistic which is the whole problem with the reboot.

I think you watch the show from the POV of today - it was ground breaking at its time. I remember we always waited for the weekly installment - It was 1998 - 2004 and It was extremley envelope pushing - nothing like it was on TV

Yes exactly I can understand that at the time certain things WERE groundbreaking bc they’d never been discussed or displayed like that I always try to acknowledge that I’m looking at the show through my Gen Z lens but can still appreciate it for how advanced it was for its time

Richard would have kept cheating. He cheated on her when things were going great and they were happy together… They were still in the honeymoon phase of their relationship. No, if he can cheat then, he will always cheat. Where would he be when she got cancer? When she had to travel? He can’t be trusted at all. Smart move, Samantha.

Re: was Richard going to cheat? As far as what I think the writers intentions- I don’t know. But this is how I feel about the situation personally. Might be a weird comparison but this actually makes me think of the end of the sopranos . I won’t spoil but iykyk! I think the idea is that Samantha can’t trust Richard anymore, so they can’t have a relationship where she can relax and be content. This is similar to Tony Sopranos situation in the sense that it doesn’t matter what actually happened- it’s that even if it didn’t happen- everyday he has to live in fear.

Cynthia Nixon always looks better with slightly longer hair to me. With the super short cuts the proportions look odd, like she's all neck and no chin or something. But the haircut in this season looks very feminine.

I've been watching SATC for 13 years now and I gotta admit I don't like season 5. Apart from Harry and Charlotte, there was nothing there for me. Most episodes are super uncomfortable for me to watch or just plain boring. Which is so sad because it's literally my favourite series since day one! For me, the best seasons are 2&3 definitely. And also, sidenote, how did I never noticed SJP was PREGNANT during the season?! I've never seen it. The stylist either did a fabulous job or I'm very inattentive 😂
