My favourite varnish is VMS for satin and flat. Other products I’ve used are Tamiya and aqua gloss. I feel like Tamiya is always granular. Aqua gloss and I never did get along. To each his own.

I hear a lot of good things about VMS, not available where I am still

Hello Metodi! I always use lacquers as they are tougher. I suggest you try out the MRP Semi Gloss for a satin finish. From experience i have been simply relying on lacquers for the past many years due to their durability and how much abuse they can take. Lucky varnish or any acrylic varnish would probably not take Abteilung quick dry thinners or other more “aggresive” weathering products. My 2 cents

I am also a fan of laquer paints. However if I apply effects with watercolor pencils then laquer varnishes destroy them, hence the search for good acrylic varnish.

Agreed. The first and the last / I also prefer Lacquer

Whenever I can I take advantage of the sheen built into a satin paint. Unfortunately it is not always possible.

Not sure if you can still get it but Testor's Dullcote is my go to. Thin with lacquer thinner and it sprays beautifully and lays down nice and flat.

Testors had some great products, like the sealer for metalizers. Sadly they are no longer around.

The best satin I have found is Mr Hobby GX 114, it looks very similar to the tamiya you sprayed but just a bit more reflective.

VMS Satin varnish is my go too now. It is by far the best I’ve used. I would use AK before that with mix results

I would say Ammo/Mig came closest to the semi-gloss black. I've had good luck with Gunze Sanyo Mr, Color and Tamiya semi-gloss.

Tamiya and gunze satin and matt varnishes need to be stirred very well, the usual shaking does not work.

Might be hard to find in Europe but SMS Gloss and SMS Matt mixed 50:50 gives an amazing satin. I also used Mr Hobby UV cut same 50:50 mix. Those mig paints are trash to spray, only good for brush painting.

I've used the Ammo by Mig and the way it looks upon application is deceiving because it's water based it looks spotty. But I applied with light coats and air pressure and it dried, finally , quite nice. I choose Ammo.

The ammo varnishes give a great finish but they are incredibly fragile. I ruined several projects using them and will not touch them again.

I’ve used Ammo a lot, mainly for the price but never liked the finish it left, I always found it a little “fake” so I changed for Tamiya’s a while ago and the result is just perfect for me

I find it very fagile as well, like all of it's waterbased counterparts.

On your test, looks like the Galeria gives the best result… Would be interesting to try the VMS, for many a favorite (I tried once but the « damp »/saturate way of applying suggest by VMS gives a « plastic » render). My usual is the Vallejo, easy to apply and good render…

*I prefer the LP-24 Tamiya varnish, but if you can't make the comparison you can use one of them without any problem and maybe the result wil suit you.*

Try golden MSA satin mineral spirit acrylic. Thins with mineral spirits. Do not use odorless mineral spirits. Vms is is great as is gsi creos lacquer . The last is my favorite the first is the cheapest.

Do you use Satin Varnish right after the paint is dried or can I use it on objects painted a week ago?
@MMScaleModels

As long as the prior paint had its time to cure you can apply varnish any time you want.

The best clear coats are the Mr Hobby GX or Mr Paint series. On the other hand, Lucky Varnish from Ammo Mig is a complete rubbish!

Here I go putting blood into the water. nothing beats "ronseal acrylic clear varnish" you can buy a big tin of it in gloss, Matt or satin when diluted goes through the airbrush and does exactly what it says on the tin. don't hate the truth Teller until you tried it.
