I was one of those viewers. It may look weird now, but Swap Shop was groundbreaking. As a nerdy child, I found Noel’s fourth wall breaking absolutely thrilling. Of course, Noel’s character flaws were just beginning to peak through then. I seem to remember my mother commenting that he didn’t seem to have much of a sense of humour about himself.

Pranksters, like Noel and Beadle, seldom have a sense of humour about themselves. If they "prank" you, you are supposed to laugh, take it in good spirits and move on. Should there be any reciprocation, a power play of one-upmanship will begin, and you won't be the one who ends it.

It's like he's just walking up to road to get a pint of milk, he turns the corner and then loosens off his cannon into a load of smoke without aiming. Definitley what you want to see when you are sitting in your PJs eating frosties. Better than carebears anyway.

I swear to god this is true! Back in the mid 80's I met up with a mate and his new girlfriend in a Manchester pub, and as one does the conversation turned round to crap T.V. ( you are all familar with this) anyway started to talk about the Shite and sometimes disturbing collections people turned up with ( yes the kid with the swastika flag came up) but then I glibly said " yes but its not as bad as the sad bolix who turns up with an assortment of rubber erasers, what a Twat eh??!! 21:14 That's commonly known as the Chegwin gasp of mock elation. Something he used for many years, and something I could imitate to perfection as an 8 year old. I did get told off for doing it in class, at school, though. You could do what you liked in the playground, but Keith Chegwin impressions were strictly verboten within the confines of the classroom, back in the 70's. I used to watch this show with a certain degree of eagerness, sat in my pyjamas, each Saturday, but as it was so long, (from 9.30 to about 12.15, before Grandstand started), there were many a lull in interest occur. Usually during the, 'talking bits', where, as shown in the example in this video, they'd chat about things that were of zero interest. Show jumping? I mean... come on. The only truly interesting bits were the music intervals and whatever cartoons they were showing between the chit-chat. Even the novelty factor of Swaparamas with Cheggers having to try and look enthusiastic whilst broadcasting live from a school rugby field in the middle of Wigan on a cold January Saturday morning, soon wore off. Funny that. They were much simpler times then. The expectations of Saturday morning television, particularly for younger viewers, was very low indeed. Prior to the likes of Swap Shop, there was about an hours' worth of programmes consisting of serials from the 1930's-50's; (Champion The Wonder Horse, for example), and a couple of cartoons. And that was your lot. The rest of the schedule before Grandstand was filled in with self-help type shows that would become synonymous with Sunday mornings as the decade worn on. Swap Shop was the first of it's kind. A magazine styled show that had other programmes, albeit cartoons, within, with an open style of presentation not seen before. Not only did it work, but it would become the standard format for decades to come.
