Chicot is another one of my books told from a down to earth perspective. It is a bit of a fantastic biography. The book is told from the perspective of a character within the story. While Melina's story was obtained from numerous interviews, Chicot's story was put together by someone who grew up with him. Jozef paints all the different faces of Chicot. Since he is not a professional biographer type of person, Jozef only tells things as he sees it. As you read the book, you will realize that Jozef is not the most reliable narrator. Unreliable narrators is kind of my thing. Every human has its own biased, and Jozef is not different with that matter. Still, he is not the type of person to downplay Chicot's flaws. As far as flaws are concerned, Chicot has many of them. This is just part of designing a well-rounded type of person. This writing style also helps ground this fantasy story by limiting the point of view. As with most of my books, I have a decent number of battles. The bulk of the story focuses on the civil war occurring in the Kingdom, and how the merchant class tried to deal with the problem.

Chapter 18 (The Book has only 30 Chapters)
At the time, I should have given more thought to the mystery of the compact. However, news that the Southern Kingdom was in full blown rebellion distracted me. Little Sophia was an unincorporated territory whose border technically fell in the Southern Kingdom. It was possible that we would be pacified, out of association. There was also the chance that the rebel warlord would force our little town to help in the war effort.
Chicot had foreseen this eventuality two years in advance. He had casually begun constructions of guard towers in the land borders of Little Sophia. He also had arranged to have a few towers in the river. Frankly, I though Chicot should have made a wall. Then again, it was easier, and cheaper to make towers than to construct a wall.
Chicot also reasoned that walls did nothing to keep out the dragons. Aside from walls, Chicot bought some large, crossbow ballista weapons. They could shoot 1 large arrow each second, by cranking a handle.
During the summer rains, Chicot gathered us all together in basement to brief us on the situation. There was a map spread out. Pointing to the Southern Kingdom he started as thus, “As you all may know, the Southern Kingdom is in open rebellion against the North… For now, Berthame is casually treating the entire situation through innocent skirmishes. The council of the Elders seems reluctant to making an example as the Southern Kingdom. Even Berthame hopes to resolve this without resorting to bloodshed.”
“How can this end without bloodshed?” asked Paula raising her hand.
“Simple, he is compelling his sleeper agents to act. Without their figureheads, the rebels will be less likely to act,” Chicot explained, “Now, our problem is going to be opportunistic vultures.”
Sir Richard then pointed to the Western Kingdom, which borders were demarcated by the river. He then said, “Our intelligence network shows that the Western Feudals plan a preemptive strike against the Southern Kingdom. They wish to earn the favor of the Berserker overlords and to enrich their coffers through looting. Naturally, the Capital will allow this since the Elders are not too keen on risking the lives of their loyal followers.”
A cold sweat fell down my spine. My mother in a trembling voice asked, “Can’t we send someone to negotiate. Surely, they can be convinced that we are on their side.”
“It is pointless to try to negotiate with common rogues. The best thing we can do is prepare for the worst case scenario,” said Gytha frowning.
“Fear not,” said Chicot, “We are not without allies.”
A week passed, in great tension. We spent most of our time manufacturing weapons for our home defense. We freely distributed to the townspeople of Little Sophia. They had already been informed of the terrible fate that was to befall them. Based on Chicot’s estimate, they had about a month before the advancing army would be within range of Little Sophia. Little Sophia was an easy target, miles away from the nearest fortification.
One night, I saw Chicot in the storage room talking with the armors. He said to the Ernan armor, “You think I should tell everyone to just evacuate and move to a stronger feudal. Sure, that would be the safest course of action…still settling down in a new place would also not do us well…first there is the highway men, and we don’t have enough supplies or man power to simply move everything.”
“Yes, I see,” Chicot said looking at the Silvia armor, “You think we should hold our ground, and hope for the best. I could use IT, but that would reveal my ace in the hole…mmm…what to do, what to do?”
