Satyanarayana Das Babaji speaks with Rajiv Malhotra about the correct understanding of māyā. The word māyā is generally translated as 'illusion', but there is a lot more to māyā than just this. First of all, Māyā is not just some impersonal thing. Māyā is person, who is also known as Māyādevi, and she has a role to play.
Māyā has two śaktis (potencies) which are called āvaraṇa śakti (the covering potency) and the vikṣepa śakti (the bewildering potency). These two śaktis influence us in two different ways. First of all, the āvaraṇa śakti causes us to forget that we are spiritual beings, and it makes us think that we are the body and the mind. Secondly, the vikṣepa śakti creates an external world of objects for us to play with and be distracted by.
Māyā however, cannot perform these two functions without the support of Bhagavān (Kṛṣṇa), because illusion always has to be rooted in reality. So māyā has her support in Bhagavān, and therefore if you want to get rid of this māyā, you have to take shelter of Bhagavān.
This is why in the Bhagavad-Gītā, when Kṛṣṇa speaks about his external potency (which is what māyā is), He says:
daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī
mama māyā duratyayā
mām eva ye prapadyante
māyām etāṁ taranti te
Translation:
This divine external potency of mine constituted of the three guṇas (sattva, rajas and tamas), is indeed very difficult to surmount. Yet those who take refuge in me alone, can cross over this māyā.
Quote from near the end of the discussion:
"The study which you're doing of this world is also using the products of māyā. You have your mind, your intelligence, your senses, but these are all products of māyā. So you're trying to study the objects of māyā, with the products or instruments of māyā, and you think that in this way you're going to get to reality? This is what science and technology is all about."
