Hi, my name is Saul Goodman, did you know that every man, woman and child have the right to become a percussionist?

Goodman was 81 and 16 years past his retirement from the NYP when this masterclass was given. Nearly all the time he is able to perform the parts more effectively than the young buck students, and that's mostly because he is so moved by the musical impulse and still so enthusiastic about ccnveying it to the students. The enormity of the sound without banging that always characterized his playing is still intact.

Thank you Jonathan for posting this. It just showed up on my You tube and I was delighted. If you know of any other videos from anyone with Saul, please let me know. Such Great memories studying with him and spending two summers with him at Lake Placid and visiting him in West Palm Beach. A wonderful man, teacher, friend and inspiration. Saul would kick our you know, but it was all in his love of music and his students. He cared and if you weren't in the game, he'd let one know it. Teaching was different back then and I am so fortunate to have had him. Missing... and this video is a treasure for me.

When did you study with him? My years were '62--'66. He was said to have "mellowed" by those who had been in his studio a decade earlier but that seems hard to believe.

I love the way he just "shooes" away the orchestra when he wants them to stop playing...like, WTF, the actual music ain't that important...just the timpani part!

He was 81 at this point and his hearing wasn’t what it used to be. Stop concentrating on that and concentrate on the technique he’s demonstrating. He was once the greatest timpanist in the world. Remember that and stop nitpicking about the pitch of drums that are unfamiliar and out of tune with themselves.
