Saurophaganax takes the true title of the lion of the Jurassic! I still wonder, why is camptosaurus the biggest unarmoured herbivore in the Morrison formation that isn’t a sauropod? I mean, the dinosaur park formation proved that there could be 6-7 ton unarmoured herbivores with carnivores in the size range of the Morrison formation, and with leviathan being even larger than most other theropods in its area code wouldn’t it make sense for unarmoured herbivores in the Morrison formation to reach 5-9 tons? I can’t help but play devils advocate here mainly because Snax is one of my favorite dinos, but what if Saurophaganax was allosaurus specifically evolved to hunt large prey. Let’s assume that Allo occupies the niche similar to a lion, we’ll also assume that Ceratosaurus is essentially a paleo hyena that contests Allo as the apex predator from time to time. This would mean that Torvosaurus would have no choice but to either compete with Allo or become something like a leopard, where it still hunts the same prey items but in a different way. With all this in mind, this leaves the Allos with a lot of competition from different carnivores and would lead it to hunt new/different game. Instead of hunting small-medium sized game that’s getting preyed on by Cera and Torvo, maybe they decided to go hunt larger game that solo torvo’s and short Cera packs couldn’t take down. Now, a pack of allosaurus might not be able to fell such titans like Brachiosaurus, but they COULD take one down that was young or sick. Over several generations, some Allos chose to exclusively hunt larger game and so evolved to grow larger and much more muscular so that if their pack was too small, they could still wrestle a small sauropod to the ground and gain access to plentiful food allowing them to continue growing and evolving into the leviathans we find today. Idk, just a theory. You have earned a loyal subscriber today!

So saurophaganax is atm likely the 3rd largest predator to walk this earth? Thats scary shit. I know its always known it was a monster but its always been downplayed so badly but it seems saurophaganax is probably a carcharodontosaurid right? Rather than an allosaurid

Didn't Allosaurids not evolve into Carcharadontosaurids? They're both in the allosauroid clade, so they are closely related.

pack-hunting would not matter against adult super-sized sauropods - no animal will normally risk the kind of injury to itself from getting hit by that tail or a leg-bump of massive momentum behind it - too easy to break a leg bone that will be fatal - there would be no 'ok, I'll take one for the team"

I have a problem with the way pack hunting is discussed in the paleo community. Often anyone who suggests pack hunting as a possibility is dismissed with the same tired talking points about how rare it is in big cats or raptors (as in large predatory birds). But do you know what would be even more rare? An entire clade of animals that all behave in the same manner. It’s almost impossible that there were no pack hunting theropods, if nothing else, due to variation. And if we accept that even if it was rare, there’s always outliers, it would make sense to me that the animals that were pack hunters were probably the ones we have found evidence of it in. The Albertasaurus bone bed, or Mapusaurus being pretty noteworthy cases. Is it likely all or most of them were pack hunters? No, not at all. But also, it’s extremely unlikely NONE of them were. So the close minded, dismissive attitude towards it seems a stubborn and arrogant point of view to me. I can’t be the only person who has thought this out.
