Freedom City. The epiphany of peaceful civilization. It shining towers and pristine streets kept safe by the ever watchful Collective -- a society of super heroes the likes of which would make Marvels fictitious best quake in their pretty vinyl boots. Man and woman alike may walk the streets with fearless abandon as even the worst of the cities villains cower in the shadows of their heroism. This is what a brochure from the City’s Department of Tourism may have offered to newcomers. But today... it could not be further from the truth.
Ten years ago, the city's best heroes and most heinous villains were summoned to galactic, multi-dimensional, all inclusive, non-denominational peace summit in the outer reaches of the Milky Way. There, they would put aside their differences for an historic meeting of the minds aimed -- not perpetuating the constant struggle between good and evil -- but toward a new chance at true harmony - at progress. This is what the invitation said. But today we know... it couldn't have been further from the truth.
At the pinnacle of his riveting keynote speech, arch villain General Ignacious Vile withdrew a curious box from his belt and pressed its single, blinking button. The galactic holocast ended there. No explosion. No spike of energy on orbital threat sensors. Just a silent calm.
Now, after all this time, Freedom City is sick. There is a malignancy spreading from the city’s underbelly, bringing with it waves of filth, disorder, and vermin with no respect for the order the Collective fought so hard to maintain. Justice and balance are dying memories. The city needs bravery.... tenacity.... and virtue... Freedom City... needs heroes.
