Great tutorial, but this still hasn't solved my issue. Even when you save those files as individual pdfs, all three artboards will still be in it when you open the pdf in illustrator. It is a single page pdf when you use a PDF reader, but all files are still intact when you open the pdf in illustrator. How can we save it in a way that only the single artboard exports? This affects my sizes when I am exporting multiple artboards as pdf that has many images in them. For instance, after i finish exporting 5 pdfs from an ai file. the size of each pdf is 20mb. But when i take those pdf's back in illustrator i still see the other 4 artboards that i didn't export in them (though it's just one page in the pdf reader), so i delete the other artboards and each file is now 4mb. Do you understand me? So please is there a way to export just one page that will remain that same page even when i import the pdf back into illustrator???

If you use Export for Screens... and select PDF, you will use one of the PDF presets. Most Presets have the "Illustrator Editing Capabilities" option checked, which will cause all the artboards included when the PDF is opened in Illustrator. Save a PDF preset (Edit menu > PDF Presets...) that does not include that option and use that during export (click the cogwheel in the export dialog to change export settings).

Hi, I've been using this system for a while BUT i wonder if you can help with a problem? I have multiple artboards, some with just vectors, some with placed images; however, each of the generated PDFs results in the exact same large file size, and when the individual PDFs are opened back into Illustrator, each contains ALL the artboards, rather than just the selected one visible in Acrobat... Do you know how I can 'crop' the data to just the selected Artboard? Thanks

i am new to this feature but that is how it usually works with pdfs in illustrator, meaning it saves a single artboard but keeps ALL the art on the canvas. it does seem to matter in terms of the file weight - 1 page is much lighter for some reason than a few despite the fact all the art is still there. maybe there's smthin the preferences that can rid of the extra art, need to check.

That is because the option keep editable in illustrator is checked in the preset you choose. You need to make a custom pdf setting file save it as a preset and then use that from the export for screen setting window

Down side with this is you need to .make a preset first and save that. I prefer using my own tool so I can do the settings from my own script and dialog
