Michael! You did an EXCELLENT job at breaking that down and keeping it straight!! I am very impressed! I’ve been researching/studying for a couple years, but have not put anything into action YET..... but if I was able to keep up & understand that, ANYONE can!!! I can’t thank you enough for your entire Energy series! You’ve taken my bits & pieces of information and enabled me to make complete sense of it all!! I’m a 58 y/o retired woman with 4 dogs, a 20’ to hauler and my maiden voyage will be Quartzsite with a partner!.....(but WE will have 6 dogs!!) I very much look forward to putting my knowledge into practice working my way into full-timing!! Thanks so much for all your presentations!! Look forward to seeing more traveling videos!! Lauri

Check your fuses. There’s a good chance that the water damage or repairs caused a short and blew the fuse. Great job at pointing this inefficiency out. Few people are aware of this. If you want to learn more about DC efficiency, look into the difference in efficiencies between DC linear voltage converters and buck/switching voltage converters.
@DuetJustusFam

All of the fuses are good so it's got to be something different. I'll figure it out sooner or later. Thanks! Hmm, I will look into the different converter types. I appreciate the great info!

Very good point with unnecessary dc-ac-dc conversions! 👌Even though I knew about the inefficiency I did not take to account that you lose power in BOTH conversions. Yet I have to point out that you also lose some power in dc to dc conversion (eg 12v to 5v). But luckily it is smaller and you lose power only in one occasion.
@blurion
6 жыл бұрын
PetriMikael I was going to make the same point. DC to DC conversion is usually somewhere between 80 and 90 percent efficient, so while bypassing the inverter is great advice, it should be pointed out that doing so doesn’t get you to 100% efficiency unless the load you are powering uses the same voltage as your battery bank (usually 12 volts, but can be 24 volts or more). I think a lot of the people watching this video might erroneously believe they can achieve 100% efficiency for all their DC appliances.
@DuetJustusFam
6 жыл бұрын
Yes. There is definitely still inefficiencies. Good point!
@DuetJustusFam
6 жыл бұрын
Great points! I meant to mention that in the video and forgot to. You will never get 100% efficiency because there are other factors that I didn't mention but DC-DC is significantly more efficient that the DC-AC-DC conversions. Thanks for getting this point across. It will definitely help they people who watch 👍🏼

The USB charger is a constant Draw, it needs to have a separate switch, The Cig Outlets NO. Off until you plug in. another thing I do is wire in a few SAE HD Outlets 10 AWG (Often used In solar Applications) And there is an Array of SAE adapter cables Like from SAE to USB, Cig Lighter, Clips, Round 12V out and so on Check Harbor Freight. Also, The 12V Banana Plugs come in handy.

They also have 12v televisions and many other household appliances that are 12v. Also, check your new 12v socket and make sure that is not defective. Make sure you get a volt meter and you will be able to check wiring before you replace sockets to make sure they are live before you do the work.

you should have a fuse in your DC panel for that 12v plug. on some rvs they run off the house battery on others its off the starter battery and is usually on the same fuse as the cigarette plug in the dash. if your dash plug works id check the dc fuses under your fridge first. if its off the starter battery it could be under the hood. under the dash. or on the side of the dash near the drivers door jamb.

Nice video Michael. If your TV is AC/DC you can run it directly from 12 volt DC as well since the TV is inherently a DC appliance. I see two possibilities for the dead outlet. First, the water damage could have corroded the wiring. Unfortunately the fix for that is new wiring which would have been easy when you were rebuilding the wall, but would be a big job now. The other possibility is that the outlet is powered via the RV AC to DC converted not the battery. Plug the RV in or start the generator to test that. If that is the case it is easy to fix.

I didn't know inverters had DC pass through, It makes sense though and saves having to run a whole other set of wires from the batteries. So assuming I have the right voltages I could remove my power supply from my gaming pc and the power brick from my monitor and power them directly from my battery?
@2AZSUN
6 жыл бұрын
My first thought, did you reverse the wiring? I've done that before, thinking I had it right, only to reverse it and have it work. I also agree, there's no point to the old school 12 volt plugs any longer, just get the USBs and be done. If you can't find ones to fit your old holes in the wall, just get the round ones like the pic you showed and buy a blank wall plate and cut a hole in the center of it.

My MagSafe MacBook Pro charger output is 18.5V 4.5A. I would be careful selecting a 12V converter. Things can go wrong electronically with buck converters. I worry about damaging my laptop. You haven’t had any trouble with the converter you showed in the video, have you? I did find one that looks like yours on Amazon made by Sopito, but I don’t recognize the manufacturer name. Thanks for the video.

I think inverters are best loaded at 80 percent. If you run them at near 100 percent most of them won't last very long. 3000 watt inverter will do 3000 watts usually but you will be replacing it before long. Yep best to not load them over 80 percent
@georgefenrich4119

Thanks, I learned a lot. So if you are not running your Inverter at full-out, then I won't need a 2500v inverter. just find out what I will be running on it at full-out and just use that one-two items at once. Thanks

So is every hot water tank wired by DC power? I'm contemplating purchasing a 1984 rare Class A, but I want to primarily boondock and I'm trying to figure this out. The seller has added golf cart batteries and a 3000w inverter so I think I'm close to being free from Shore power, but I'm still struggling a bit. Thank you so much!

Not to rain on your parade, but dc-dc converters are about 80% efficient. If you want ultimate efficiency for a usb power plug you could pick off your 4 volt rail of your fully charged lead acid battery and get about 4.4 volts, which is within the tolerance of the usb plug. Then there is the I^2R loss of your wire; keep it short or go big. If the wire losses are high enough you could pick off the 6 volt rail and stay within the usb voltage tolerances at all levels of battery charge. At this point you are doing everything to save a watt. Looks like you would be better off with the inefficiencies of heat, since it is so cold.
