General note: Voltage drop limits the length of a service run from the transformer. If you need additional distance covered, you need a line extension of the high voltage power to allow the transformer to be set closer to your build site. Line extensions should only be done by the utility company.

Correct. I usually run into that issue when I exceed 150 linear feet of line.

Thank you, Keith. I've just started site preparation on my property and power is one of the items swirling around in my head.

Might as well run a fiber line down that trench as well

Good call. However fiber is in the front lot and not the back lot

I wonder how many power providers would allow for this. My power company horizontally drilled 500' for my service and charged my $5000. So no trench and no damage to existing trees, landscaping etc., so the $5k was the cheaper route in my case.

Doesn't Rocky Mountain Power require fiberglass bends?

Why wouldn't the power company trench and lay the conduit? It's in their best interest to do so.

@@kylesturdivant3751 not necessarily. Many local power companies install new services up to a certain length from their own expense because they’ll recoup that expense easily in the first couple of months. My local utility company installed my service at no charge. Doesn’t seem worth to the owner’s time unless we’re talking tens of thousands of dollars

Wait, if the power company is responsible for everything up to the meter then why are they letting you install the conduit? I would think that for their insurance and liability reasons that they would want to do it themselves in case something went wrong in the future.

The power company tells you how it has to be done and inspects it. Then the power company maintains it and it becomes an easement. It's how it's done everywhere. Developers put in the services and give them to jurisdictions that maintain them.

They let me trench and they inspect. I save and they approve.
