That is one fairly decent GM G body you scored right there. A car from an era when GM was the biggest auto manufacturer in the world, in a time when most North American households had one sitting in their driveways in the version of their favoured division. Judging by the condition, that would be one vehicle worthy of restoring into a restomod or cool daily driver with the right body work and mechanical refresh. It's interesting that the PRNDL indicator at the bottom indicates it came originally equipped with a three speed automatic. The G bodies were in production from 1978 up until around 1984 for the four door versions. But I think the two door versions (Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Cutlass and Regal) continued on until 1987 before production finally at the time when all the front wheel drive cars had well taken over their market. But if I'm not mistaken, in 1984 that car should've came originally equipped with a four speed automatic if it had been originally equipped with the 305 Chevy small block V8 (a 350 was never an option from the factory). Only if it had been equipped with a 229 V6 (basically a Chevy 305 minus two cylinders) originally, that would explain the three speed automatic. Check the trunk floor carefully. That's typically where they like to rust. The rear license plate holder also folds downward to reveal and enable access to the fuel filler if I remember correctly. Wow, I can't believe I know so much about these GMs since I'm actually a die hard blue oval guy who's been turning wrenches at blue oval dealerships since 2000.

I've got fond G-body memories! I had a '85 in 1993 that I paid $600 for - it got hit from every direction, plus severely overheated. I did drive it home with no work, aside from a brake job later. The valve seals were as hard as a brick, so it left a plume of blue smoke everywhere I went! Sounded just like that one there, too - I used to get pulled over by MA state troopers every single time I passed one coming the opposite direction. That thing could take sharp right hand turns without any steering input, thanks to a pretzeled control arm. It also never had second gear! It just skipped right over into 3rd, lol. I drove that thing for 2.5 years - took it to the mountains of NH, NYC, and towed a trailer with 3 ATVs on it every Sunday to our riding spot. Only left me stranded once with a bad starter, right in front of the autoparts store! I was buying my bi-weekly case of oil. With all it's ugliness, that car ran great with the stock 305, and rode beautifully! First I lost reverse, and finally the trans let go, and all I had was 1st gear. I drove it to a junkyard that would give $100 for any car you drove there. I had to argue with the guy! HAHAHA! It was ROUGH! He says to me, "You hit everything but the lottery with that thing!" I told him I just put a new starter in, and he finally relented. :D Here's a couple pics from winter of '93: www.udrop.com/4G5b/85_Monte.jpg www.udrop.com/4G5c/1985_Monte_Carlo.jpg

Not a bloated as the mid 70’s cars, not the “bloat on a budget” of the 78 - 80 downsize either. Just crisp yet flowing lines with a nice amount of chrome. Always loved that dash too. Nice and open. Doesn’t pen you in. That interior (with a good cleaning) just makes you want to stretch out and cruise. One hand resting on the top of the wheel and one slung over the passengers seat back. Windows down. Just floating down the road headed to the lake. Summer. Good times. Better times than we are in now - damn, that’s a lot of imagery from just one semi rusted malaise era GM mush mobile. Maybe I need to get me one!
