We dropped a Honda 40 hp off the back of a dingy into 35 feet of water in the Caribbean. We couldn’t get it off the bottom so we called the charter company where we rented the catamaran. We tied a bleach bottle onto a line to the motor and gave them the GPS coordinates. A couple hours later they came out to retrieve the motor and took it back to the dock. We watched them disassemble the motor spray it with freshwater take a few bits off spray with air then oil and WD-40. They then reassembled and started the motor. Incredible. From that point forward I always bought Honda motors for my outboards.

I've got one of these on the back of a small houseboat I recently bought. The tell tale is more of a drip, the idle hunts up and down, the revs catch at around 2000 then once over that hump spool up smoothly. Have put a new external fuel filter on, changed a fuel hose and adjusted the fuel/air screws. It idles better but obviously needs a carburettor clean out and the cooling system needs an overhaul. I think you might have convinced me to persist with it, get a shop mechanic to do an overhaul and save a few bucks, well, compared to buying a new motor.

Good save on the Honda. I noticed you did nothing with the rubber hose on/in the lower unit ... That is a feed from a built-in "pitot" tube facing the front of the lower leg. It picks up water pressure from the slip stream and will signal a water pressure speed-o-meter. Nice to have when you are trimming/tuning. Compare speed to RPM, etc. Next time you are in there, tidy it up and route up the leg to the transom clamp. Simple vinyl tubing will get the signal to the dash and your new gauge. It's a handy Honda feature :)

Hi Mate, I have a suggestion. I like the idea of blowing out the control cables to remove sea water. I had the idea to blow a bit of alcohol through them first since alcohol mixes with water. Then shoot the oil in. Could remove more of the water, but its just an idea.

We have one of these outboards at the yacht club with 1600 hours on it, still running fine. One common issue with the telltale is the fitting that screws into the engine that the rubber hose fits onto. This fitting rusts and blocks the telltale flow. We have a piece of coat hanger wire on the boat that we poke into this fitting to clear it each year. My current car was fished out of a lake back in 2008, I bought it at an auction for the right price, spent 3 months getting the engine and all the electrics running again and still drive it around today. Apart from the Piston/Rod, computers, motors that control the heater settings, most of the parts, including the starter are the original, and I still drive this vehicle today.

Lots of good info. I was told by a marine mechanic that the seal on the oil drain plug was an often overlooked replacement part when doing oil changes. The stock part is a couple of dollars (canuckistany dollhairs) from the dealer, he said that it gets flattened after several uses and doesn’t seal reliably so they replace it with each oil change ?

Sweet motor & another outstanding video! Here in the U.S. when 4 strokes have been submerged, a common practice is to pickle them with diesel fuel. The diesel is supposed to inhibit corrosion. Have you resuscitated any outboards that were pickled with diesel?
@DangarMarine
8 жыл бұрын
Diesel is really good for all sort of jobs like that, and as an added bonus it is a lot cheaper that anything you buy in a spray can so you can use lots of it. I've also seen it pumped in a recirculating tank to unseize motors too. Methylated spirits also has its place because it is water soluble and will carry the water away with in. It doesn't have the protective qualities so Methylated spirits first then diesel second is a good combination.

I had to replace the impeller as well and had to pull it off twice just to make sure things were good to go. Turns out all I had to do was check for blockage and spray water through the upper section of the motor. I don't know why this had to happen. I had done mine years ago on a 225 EFI with no issues seeing the water spitting out. Different things for different motors I suppose..

I always enjoyed the serious of your videos about BF40. I own 1995 version of one myself for 7 years. Just wanted to share one hack that I come up with to fix water circulation in it. I replaced water pump but it is still have a bad circulation and used to burn my thermostat every 6 month. While replacing thermostat, I noticed white build up going all the way down to the system. Given that, I connected gear lube pump to water output and pumped a 2-3 quarts of CLR into the system. Flushed it with water after and it works like a charm from that point :) Water runs noticeably stronger and thermostat issue is not happening anymore.

One of the best outboard motors IMO in the United States we call those Hondas the Grey Ghosts because many police boats use them and you cant hear their engines when they are following you at night without any running lights they like to sneak right up to the side of your boat to make sure people aren’t drinking or smoking Marajuania on board one night my best freind and i were riding on someone else’s boat and the two of us had not noticed a police boat only a few feet from us as it was a Inflateable with the Honda motors on it eventually the police turned on the strobe lights and we both were surprised how close they were to our boat he and I laughed later about that one because the officer said he was idling on the dock we were on at a restaraunt and watched us having drinks there he wanted to check the paperwork on the boat and the drivers sobriety which was legal as they only wrote a warning On safety equipment and let us go on our merry way which was a short distance to our final destination for the evening ! And yes i can also relate to being under budget on outboard motors to the point i almost hoard them when i find a decent deal on a used one BTW ive owned 17 or 18 boats so far in my life and i probably wont stop anytime soon in my defense i grew up in Florida and we lived only 13 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and about a hour and a half to the Florida Keys both of where i fished and Scuba Dove quite a bit

Nice very competent and clean explaining. Thank you so much man. Please where can I find that video about the carb cleaning of this honda bf 40 you've been mentioning? I've got the bf50 thats started to die on me in idle run. I will subscribe definitely.

Hi Peter. This video is on general carb cleaning (actually a Yamaha) kzitem.info/news/bejne/2puVu51vfWqVdXo but I do need to clean one of the Honda carbs again as the tuning video will show soon!

Well done, usually a heavy mono line stuck through the tell tale tube should clean out most debris, but if using air, what psi do you think is safe to use?

You can use a fair bit of pressure to do this, the only thing that is going to pop is the hose from the block to the lower cowling which is easy to put back on.

hi Dangar, really learned a lot from your videos. a very stupid question: Will an outboard motor work properly if it was installed upside down (Propeller on top provided the cooling system works perfectly)?

This is actually quite an interesting question. People often need to run engines in different orientations. Four strokes are tricky because of the oil sump and pump, but the engine of a two stroke can run in any orientation. The tricky bit is the carburettors that need to be the right way up for the bowl to hold fuel. Some may be flipable if they have a symetrical bolt pattern.

My F40 2009 has a defective high pressure fuel pump.... a nightmare. For whatever reason the dealer did not replace it when the bulletin was the released by Yamaha. I was chasing after an overheating issue because it seemed temperature related and it is. But no alarm on the control, raised alarm! Why did it not sound upon RPM roll back? Fuel starvation? But it worked fine when cold. The HP fuel injection pump! I read forum and ordered a Quantum after market for $69 USD... hopefully this is the problem. It all points to it. Maybe it is low pressure pump too? The dealer gave me a kit free given the history operation was successful other than one broken nut.... aghhh the 2 bolts look the same but were different and ended up getting stuck in the block.... solutions?

Thanks. Learn so much from every video. Locktite or antiseize on water pump housing? Do you use a sealant when attaching the gear box to the lower leg? Thanks again. love binge watching these.

No sealant when attaching the gearbox and a little locktite on the bolts for the water pump.

How much time and money do you have into it after the revival? Even at $1000 you're so far ahead by DYI. Great video as always!

I recently go a 3/8 drive cordless snap on impact wrench which is great for this sort of thing. Not too brutal but gets just about everything undone.
