ROBERT!! PLEASE get those doors off the hinges and outside! Lead poisoning is nothing to mess with. Get some plastic on the ground and put the door on some saw horses. Then apply your soy gel or CitruStrip with a throw away brush. Brush one direction and leave it thick. Cover the door with plastic (saran-wrap weight) and let it sit for 5 hours. Then remove the goop and paint and dispose in a plastic bag or container. When done, wrap everything up in the ground plastic and take to a hazardous waste disposal. DO NOT dry scrape or sand! Lots of videos out there on removing lead paint, restoring hardware and making repairs. A couple I like are Restoration Nation, Transcend Furniture, Thomas Johnson Furniture Restoration and Crigun Restoration. PLEASE don't risk your health by removing that paint indoors and contaminating everything in the house! Susan S in Spokane

Robert, those doors are irreplaceable! Do yourself a favor and watch a video on restoring old doors. Can Dan help? The orange cleaner is an oil, and I believe it will hinder a paint or top coat from drying. I also think you can put the hinges and door knob in a crock pot and simmer them to loosen old paint. There are so any videos to help learn tricks of the trade. I am afraid some things like vinegar spray and orange oil might be hurting the finish. I give kudos for trying something new, but please, look into some advice so they are worth all the efforts!! I love your channel!!

Yeah, like maybe vinegar will dry out the wood. I think any oil put on the wood would prevent latex paint from sticking (know this from my personal experience). It is ok if you plan on using an oil based stain though.

Those doors are going to look fabulous. The original finish on the interior door was probably shellac, which can be removed with isopropyl alcohol (ipa) which is available at your local drugstore, and steel wool, give it a good sanding then reapply a new shellac finish with 2-3 thin coats and lightly sand with 400 grit. Dental picks would work to get the paint out of the difficult bits on the exterior door. When that’s all done, give it a coat of boiled linseed oil, and let it cute for a few days.

Robert, the paint used for the interior doors vs outside are 2 different formulas. The one for the exterior is more durable for outside weather conditions vs interior doors, which is why you’re having a harder time removing the paint with the soybean paint stripper. I would use the orange paint stripper to see if it removes any more paint. I hope this helps.

If the outside door was painted in old pictures, I would repaint with oil enamel after repairing the checked wood. You can still stain the inside. It would be easier to strip if you un-pin the hinges and lay the door flat. Try a brass wire brush to get into the nooks and crannies. It's soft enough that it should not damage the wood. You can boil the hardware in an old pan to remove the paint. I saw a tip to get the paint to adhere better to metal. After a good cleaning, heat it with a propane torch. You will see the parts change color as it drys the metal. You don't need them too hot 🥵.

In the early '70s I used Strip Eze and the Sears stove-coil tool to strip decades of paint from a huge turn-of-the-century luxury apartment in Chicago. It is still available at Ace hardware and even at wallyworld. Maybe it works better than the soy product. I could scrape the thick layers of paint with heat, as long as the bottom layer was varnish, which has a lower boiling point than latex, possibly oil-based paint, too. I can't recall being blocked by any layers. It took Daley-II's lawfirm feo weeks to tear it down after the ultimate landlord screwed-up the mortgage. I'll never visit that corner again.

So glad you got a real paint scrapper! However you were using it wrong. It's meant to be used with two hands. One on the handle and one on that knob on the head, then you pull (not push) the scrapper with the wood grain, with you using slight pressure on the knob, being careful not to gouge the wood. (I saw that you were using a pulling motion after I typed the first part) Sorry to sound nit picking but I have done/use this before. I have had where there weren't any bubbles on a door I was stripping and basically had to use a combination of scrapper, steal wool, sanding and a whole lot of elbow grease. It will look wonderful once finish and you'll see details that you didn't know was there. Oh and don't forget to sharpen your scrapper when needed. A sharp blade makes a difference. My only other suggestion to use is to cover the paint stripper when on the door with plastic wrap and make sure that the sun isn't shinning on it. This works for me SOMETIMES but not always. Also I always use Circa 1850 stripper. More expensive but seemed to work the best with what I can get from a big box store. As for the inside door, keep in mind that you will need to sand it and that might help with what is left of some of the paint in places. Applying either varnish or lacquer isn't that hard (it's just like painting) and I know you have the skills to do it! When you're ready to clean the bell, hinges and other metal items let me know, and I'll give you tips on that 😉

Love the old doors, but the East Lake Door is beautiful and so happy that you started on it as well to help preserve it. Was great to see your parents there in the backround going though things to help preserve the family history. thinking this East Lake Door didn't get so effected by the stripper maybe cause it is out in the elements all of the time ?? Where the other doors in the house are not?? you look so like your dad, Robert. Again Robert, thinking du to the East Lake Door being the main door to the house, and mainly out in the elements that is why the paint is seeming like it is baked on, cause maybe it is, from all the outside exposure it is getting?? Maybe ask Scott??

I've used Citrus Strip quite a few times on old items, too. One was my Mothers Hoosier Cabinet with many layers of paint. Yes, it does take a few applications to get through multiple layers of old oil based enamel paint. But it's worth it. I use a wide putty putty knife to remove large sections. Various tools in small places. Then, the tool is cleaned by dumping the scrapings into a metal can for disposal. Helps keep the work area a little cleaner.

Wonderful job on the doors. Now you need a period glass for the front door. Dare I ask for the dimensions? I did some research a long time ago and the solid pink glass was and is likely not original, replaced somewhere along the line. The door would have had beveled leaded glass or stained glass. The transome likely held the address number or "the Byrds" spelled out. Or most likely beveled clear glass, possibly with a texture. Just an opinion. 👍👍❣️❣️ Will have to watch again later, got to go to a meeting.

I wonder if the farmhouse even had an address number. My Nebraska relatives in the early 1960s had as their address, their last name and town name. The mailbox was on the main road by the road leading to their farmhouse. Later in the '60s or maybe '70s we had to put the hwy number on the envelope.

Gosh, I wish I was there. I love stripping paint off. LOL. Seriously, invest in the orange stripper. I think it’ll do the job but it’s gooey too. I definitely think after the paint is off you will have to do some sanding. All in all that is a gorgeous east lake door. I could even see the waving in the glass. It’s hard to see in the video but on the other door has the paint worked itself into the grain of the wood? If so, you might have to use some steel wool with the orange stripper n rub like heck into the grain then wipe off n do again if need be. These are a few tips that I do. But it’s your door n you do it your way whatever makes you happy. They both are looking so good. It’s a lot of work but what a great reward to see it finished. Good luck my friend. ♥️♥️😊👍👍🐶🐶👏👏

Door looks beautiful. I got a table from my parents. Its old, but I'm not sure how old. My estimate a minimum of 100 years old. Like your door, it had several layers of paint on it. I applied the stripper to find several gawdy layers of paint on it including and ugly purple, a blue, even a green. Under all of that was a beautiful walnut grain. Not sure why people would do that to a beautiful piece of wood. Glad to see you're wearing masks.

Wash with soapy water, let dry. I use Liquid Gold at the end to bring the wood back to an even color. I think Walmart has that. I love bringing old things back. Do smaller sections. Doing large areas means you have to work faster or it will dry and you'll have to apply more.

I haven’t used it myself, but I’ve watched people online use the citrus gel and they seemed to have good results. First, they took the door off so the stripper would stay in one place and not run, once the door was up on sawhorses, they put on the stripper real thick and covered it in plastic for a few minutes. Then scraped off the paint. It seemed to need more stripper for each coat of paint. There’s a thing called a paint tool, you need that, also if you can find any dental tools they are a great help in the crevices. Hope that helps🤗❤️🐝
