In Office Complex, it's also possible to save Dr. Newell, the scientist dangling from the ceiling (just like the scientist at 8:30) in the flooded and electrified office. Easiest way to do this is, from outside the flooded office, throw a grenade inside the room such that the explosion will be close enough to damage the dangling scientist but _not_ kill him, quickly turn around and move away so that he's not rendered before the explosive detonates, and then simply wait for the grenade explosion to injure him. If done right, when you return, you'll find him alive and responsive, i.e. you can ask him to follow you. However, he'll still be partially embedded in the ceiling, which is just as well since you couldn't lead him past the office's locked door regardless. However, you'll likely want to turn off the light switch anyway to stop the water from being electrified and provide him with a safe escape whenever he decides to climb down.

On my second playthrough I tried to get as many as I could and group them. The first grouping had 5 scientists and 4 security officers, and was in office complex just before the stairs to Van Buren's room. I left them a few grenades (since I hit the limit) and shot down the tripmine and grenaded the turret in "We've Got Hostiles", and I think it broke his AI. When I started shooting at the "12 dumbass scientists" guy and his buddy, their first reaction was to shoot the scientist, so I had to finish them off quickly. Unfortunately, in the second climb-up room, one of the grunts threw a grenade and killed one of the two scientists. I left the silo door scientist a shotgun (because I was full already) I failed to group them in Questionable Ethics because more HECU arrived and presumably shot some while I was missing, which was the reason why I always try to pair security guards with scientists.

Like, seriously, none of the Security Guards we meet in the base game or expansions ever backed down from a fight, and were all still level-headed, and, despite everything, many of the Science Team members were surprisingly brave given the situation they were stuck in. Really gives perspective on why HL2's Resistance had so many Black Mesa personnel in leadership positions, despite very few of them likely having any sort of military or high executive experience.

Ya barney battled against xen head on at one point and some officers can be wrecking balls, that one guy in the opposing force stayed level headed even after getting shock and that one security guard promised to to cover him and died bravely, as for the scientist, I gotta say some are badass, that one scientist risk his life going into the center of a crash site and rescuing shepherd, or how lamda held their ground and secure an area in the facility

16:01 In the catwalk section with barnacles, you can use one of said barnacles to pull you up to the second floor. That kind of logistics with linking up all the different survivors into groups is what I always find my self doing at the end of the day when I'm replaying half-life. Also wow, I didn't know you can save the bleeding security guard reaching for the med station. Good to see someone summarise all the ways of saving and connecting everyone possible in a single video

Love the idea of saving as many friendly NPCs in games as possible. I've seen challenges for the Halo games for this, nice to see Half Life get the same treatment too. I also appreciate you adding lore or logical reasoning as to why you leave or bring NPCs to certain areas, like mentioning everybody groups together or gathers ammo and whatnot. Hope there's more series getting challenges like this.

i absolutely love that the game has so many optional folks you can save without any bs morality systems to guide you. it's just so much more immersive and having the gaurds help you fight is often incentive enough to keep them alive. or you could just kill everyone and it be seen as killing them for ammo to survive yourself. but the game will never judge you for it, they're just other folks in the same boat as you. it's both more immersive and adds to the horror since they're often used to telegraph threats without having you die and need to backtrack. honestly playing the game for the first time i was surprised how much of a horror game it felt like in its opening chapters.

i dont remember if i've left a comment here but just in case here's another one. i really respect the commitment to the rp in this video, i sometimes feel like speedrunners lose sight of the story in favor of the mechanics(this is my own implicit bias and i know im wrong esp with the evidence of ut speedrunners ruining a run by hugging asriel) but the fact that you leave guns for scientists and guards and remove obstacles just really makes this video. it becomes an actual story being told through gameplay and i love it so much

In case anyone's curious most of the tricks Jam uses to save folk still seem to work with the anniversary update. Rapidly spamming e on scientists to break their animation, entering office complex by activating the elevator from the outside, the whole quick save/load trick. The exception may be anything that requires grenade jumping since the update made grenade mechanics much more like 2 and black mesa.

This was a *very* interesting vid for me to watch because back in the late 90's I started writing a guide for saving the scientists myself (think a gamefaq style guide with screenshots - this was years before youtube remember). I didn't finish it because the content dropped off pretty hard in the latter part of the game (I stopped at Residue Processing I think) which would've made a written guide pretty boring, especially if someone were actually going to try follow it (which I started to feel was unrealistic). Still it was really nice to see someone run with the same idea and make an entertaining video out of it. Well done.
