Perennial ebony spleenworts. Shallow roots, grows as an understory plant. Prefers chalky loamy soil and at least partial shade. Native in my zone (6b). Quickly losing habitat. Is often found on hillsides and side of road where more often than not, ends up being mowed down. Reproduces via spores. Is gender-neutral until chemical responses of the colonies needs for male vs female initiates hormonal changes to become male or female. Needs no special attention and dies back to the ground in winter. Older ferns become taller over time, often towering over offspring.

Its my pleasure, and I hope Fern’s work as a savior of rare ferns” inspires others to help save little plants, no matter how insignificant they may seem❤

Tee hee…thank you. With all of my fae folk, I try to let them represent something and with Fern, I guess her story would be “never doubt potential”. Just because someone or some thing looks different or isn’t exactly what one would expect, doesn’t mean we should doubt the potential. Heck, we have a 3-legged turtle around here who comes up every year to lay her eggs. Most would think she was suffering but she has potential for many generations of offspring and helps keep everything in balance down at our pond.

Oh my, you can perform surgery on top of everything else? I can just imagine the cost at a medical facility! I just light up when the fairy’s come out to play. They live the best life in the world! Thanks for sharing this my dear friend! You light up my life as well!!!❤️

Lucky for Cleburne’s fae, they have a not-for-profit medical facility where all they have to do is cover the cost of popsicle sticks and glue! 😂😂😂

Do you know I have lots of broken houses and fairies? I still use them even when their wings get damaged I still use them because I love my fairies so much and the little ferns look just perfect in this area.

They certainly have. Its funny because rarely do they appear vibrant when I find them. Most are very tiny and struggling against competition of thick weeds. They are usually alone because no space for offspring to take hold. The only going for them in the wild is the shade. But once they relocated under Fern’s watchful eye, they are bright green, getting tall and having babies!!!❤❤❤
