Today we're having some fun with one of the older Local Legends, the Savoi-Marchetti S.55 over the stunning Chicago scenery by Drzewiecki Design.
The Italian S.55 was probably one of the most successful aircraft models of the 1920s, not in terms of production numbers or fame, but innovations and flying characteristics. In 1926 the prototype set 14 world records, including for speed, altitude and distance. In total over 240 S.55s were build and further records were set. The S.55 was one of the first aircraft to cross the South Atlantic successfully on multiple occasions. One of these crossings was done with “Jahú” that is represented here in the sim and is also the only remaining S.55 still in existence. In 1933 24 S.55X flew from Orbetello, Italy to Chicago to attend the Century of Progress International Exhibition. The whole flight was done in tight formation and took over 48 hours.
The S.55X is also part of the Local Legend 4 pack and probably would have been more suitable for this video, as it is the exact airplane that flew over Chicago in 1933, down to the paint scheme. But I have to say that I prefer to fly the S.55 “Jahú”, as it hasn’t got a modern GPS in the cockpit.
Airplanes like the S.55 are the reason why I love Flight Simulators. It’s an airplane that most likely will never fly again, but thanks to the sim we can get a glimpse of what it must have been like to fly.
The S.55 package is fantastic, you get two totally unique designs, with great visual models and soundsets. Overall, they are fun to fly, and great for low level exploration flights.
I’m very happy with the purchase and I can't think of anything wrong with it.
Apart from the water physics, but that isn't an issue with the S.55 but rather the sim. I would love to see improved water physics, like all other water aircraft in MSFS the ground handling of the S.55 isn’t very good. I really hope that is something that’ll come with MSFS 2024.
On this flight we’re exploring the absolutely incredible Chicago Landmarks scenery by Drzewiecki Design. It’s one of the best sceneries I have ever seen. On every flight I find new details. In this video only a portion of the scenery is visible, apart from the whole downtown area there are other landmarks, bridges, stadiums, harbors/marinas, trains and more.
I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching!
