Sawyer recommends you backwash with force not gently. If you do it with out a sufficient force the water will follow the path of least resistance which will only clean a few pathways instead of the whole filter thus reducing the flow rate and efficiency of the filter. They say the filter is more than robust enough to handle a forceful flush.

Hi Bob, contrary to what you say, Sawyer recommends to pretty much force the water in when backflushing, to prevent it from creating a path of least resistance. I saw this in one of their videos and it totaly makes sense. I have the same filter, love it....thanks for the video.

Great video! same meathod I use except I use distilled water for back flushing when I get home...so as not to leave any hard water sediment (from tap water) in the drying filter. Enjoy watching your videos!

I know you posted this years ago. I just purchased this system myself tonight. My question is how has the filter been overall to this point? I am sure you have a lot of uses thus so just looking for any tips you may have. The cleaning video was great. Have you replaced the filter? It says a million gallons, just looking for real world results. Thanks!

Hey Bob. The last time I filter water before I get home I pour filtered water over the end where the dirty water goes in the filter and rinse the threads and outside of the filter. Then I take a plastic bottle with filtered water and back flush with the filter. I use a tornado tube to attach the bottle to the end where the clean water comes out. Now I put the filter in a clean plastic bag. This way filtered water is all over the filter inside and out. Then when I get home I let the filter air dry.

I'm so glad you caught me on that. I rather have people have the correct information then the wrong information. Especially on a product such as this one.I'm going to see if KZitem I'll let me put the link to their website and video up. So people can watch it too. I'm not sure they will let me though. It has changed a lot since Google bought it. And not for the good.thanks for watching brother

I'm hoping to get back out there soon. I have put on about 15 lbs. that I need to lose before I load up my pack. I'm guessing all my winter gear will be around 35+ lbs. Unlike last year I did actually get some good winter gear. LOL. I'm hoping to go back out to the Black Elk Wilderness area or the Centennial Trail. I also might do some trails in Spearfish that are designed for snowshoeing. I just got a GPS and a 200 lumen head lamp so hopefully no getting lost again. LOL. Take care brother.

I love this thing. I did notice I didn't get that grey part with mine though :-(

Hi Dale.. Don't feel bad I have a friend of mine that has been using his for 3 plus years and has yet to clean it.. Which I do not recommend.. It is a good idea to back flush and sanitize your water filter before you.. You really shouldn't need a new one the old one should be just.. Just a quick tip and I'm sure you already know this...Please be careful with it in the Winter months you do not want the filter to freeze and crack... Thanks for your comment brother I do appreciate it...

Great video I would suggest leaving the filter filled with the solution submerged in it for a few minutes before the rinse / dry. To reliably ensure destruction of any giardia lamblia cysts that may be present. At 8mg/liter chlorine (approx 3 drops per liter regular 6% bleach) at 41 degrees Fahrenheit pH 8.0 cyst survival rate is 0.4% after 10 minutes. Higher water temperatures and lower pH increase effectiveness as do higher concentrations of bleach but in any case you should let it soak for a while if you want to be on the safe side.

Yeah, I work with 304 st. stl. all the time. Use a bottle brush to clean, or some river sand/fine gravel. Then rinse out with boiling water (or boil some water in it) to sanitize. Let dry thoroughly before storing. I don't like st. stl. water bottles much because of this (and the weight). I mostly use one-liter soda/water bottles and recycle 'em if they get too nasty for a little bleach water to take care of.

Hey, Bob, stainless steel and bleach don't get along -- the bleach will pit the stainless. Eventually you'll wind up with pinholes in that souvenir bottle if you use bleach water in it.
