I really hope you do make that video when you are done. I don't think I have every heard a Couesnon before. Thanks.

Please do an *after* video on this sax! Also curious to see where they positioned that high F#. Clearly this is an old horn but I'm guessing due to the left hand bell keys it's probably post-1930? I love odd European makes from that time period. It seems like by that time there were major industry leaders who set some sort of benchmark for sound but everybody was still experimenting instead of just copying and many of these firms had innovations from the prior generation that they could perfect and bring into play. A fun hodgepodge, but a hodgepodge that is more sonically accessible to the modern player than horns from the split bell key era.

Agree! I will definitely try to make a video if I finish it with enough time to spare before it goes home. I am not totally sure, but I think you are correct in the timing. Couesnon serial numbers/dates are not well documented, to my knowledge.

Yes, please do a video of the restoration of those Cousenons. I'm waiting for my 1925 Couesnon alto to come back from a restoration,, along with its soprano cousin from the same year.

Does your alto look similar to this one?

Thank you for making this videos, people need to know that out there actually a lot of stuff on that saxophone can get us an enhancement if you want to consider a modern saxophone. It's pretty sad to see that everyone just coping the same metal frame nowadays (yea yea not everyone but 99.9%)

Firstly, this was such an interesting piece of information! Secondly, please make a video on this horn when you have the opportunity. Finally, a low A Couesnon Monopole eh? If I could have one alto with a low A, let's just say it wouldn't come from Selmer!

the second cousnon is a monopole of the 50s with a very similar design of the the pierret super artist of the same period, with low Bb, B and C# inlined on the same rod (no A in the pierret, though)... which brings me to another question: are you going to finish overhauling the pierret? thanks for sharing with us your experiences!

Pretty soon I will have answered that question on every video I have published! Yes, I will eventually get back to it. It is a large time commitment, equivalent to taking maybe a week, a week and a half without pay. Plus the rest of life has to align as well. I'll get back to it when I can 👍

Also the more interesting thing about that second Couesnon is the range from low A to high G.

@@StohrerMusic There is a catalogue of the Robert Martin music shop of 1957: the Counsnon alto, a Monopole Conservatoires with high F#, was priced 67.390 fr. while the Selmer (mark VI?) was 62,500 fr. The Couesnon tenor was 78,250 vs 74.500 of the Selmer. Quite telling, isn't it?

Nice! Before you go into the next video we need you to get the pronunciation right 😜 Just kidding :) Those horns are indeed very good! When I worked in a shop in Belgium we had these every week on the bench. Best and thanks for sharing

Haha please do help me pronounce it right! What is the general consensus on Couesnons over there? Are early ones like this one being played as well?
@danieldaemen

@@StohrerMusic well, they are still being played by beginners in smaller marching bands or wind orchestras. I have never seen a pro play one.

@@danieldaemen vintage Couesnons? Haha what an embarrassment of riches. I honestly find it hard to believe! Those were pro horns when they were made and over here they are still considered pro horns. The low A in particular is extremely sought after. If you ever see one of those, let me know!

Couesnon pro models are totally legit! Their factory testers included Marcel Mule, Daniel Dafeyette and Michel Noaux. These guys play tested the instruments at the factory. I know a pro in nyc that has a Couesnon tenor tested by Noaux. He says it is good enough to be a “main horn”.

Oh gosh! I have a saxophone with an oval tone hole I just bought… I’d assumed it was deformed, maybe it’s meant to be like this!
@StohrerMusic

I have only ever seen this as a factory/intended feature on this saxophone, so most likely you just have a damaged (but fixable!) horn, but I would be interested to see what you've got if you want to snap a photo and send me an email.

@@StohrerMusic I’m not sure how I send an email… ? Have you got a website? Tbh I think you’re right, I think it’s just midly deformed… but it’s nice to know an oval hole will work just fine 🤔…it’s now much less oval than it was. I bought it very cheap from eBay, it’s a 50s dearman president, it’s quiet an attractive tenor horn, I’ve removed all the keys, cleaned it, I recon there was a mouse nest inside it, removed a couple of broken springs and removed the worst of the dents, bent the crook back as that was smushed… it’s not a valuable horn but it seems fairly well made, much better than a modern plastic key jobbie. If I can get it playable I’ll be pleased with my efforts 😬
