My spiritual guru and friend Athena Demetrios used to regularly cajole me - "Did you do your affirmations?" - and I'd sigh and guiltily admit - "No - but I will!" It took me years, but finally, about eight months ago, circumstances in my life finally pushed me to the point of putting on paper and reading aloud the affirmations every day. They have made a huge difference.
For 20 minutes, I shut out the world, and read affirmations of how I want to be, who I want myself to be, what I want - underscored by asking the universe for help and support. To be loving, to judge myself less and forgive myself more, to manifest my inner and outer resources to realize my dreams and visions.
I have been bolstered and empowered hearing words that pertain to my strength, to who I am, what I believe in. It makes it more real and palpable. I'll talk about it some more in upcoming videos.
This morning it hit me how powerful the affirmations are for me during this epidemic. While many of the affirmations pertain to my work and "career" and are less relevant than urgent issues of survival and safety, committing time to shutting out the world and hearing ourselves affirm who we are and who we want to be, and what we believe in, is important in so many ways.
We NEED to hear our own voice - with the barrage of the world shut out. We need to touch the deepest recesses of who we are, how we feel, what we value and aspire to, our strengths and frailties - and feel gratitude and forgive ourselves. We are doing our best.
I see myself escaping into distractions most of the time, to numb the pain and fear. But when I do the affirmations as I hike alone in the early morning before anyone is up and outside, I touch the universe and my own spirit. It helps me find grace.
As Athena says, the universe is listening. "It's there to support you," she says. She has suggested I address the "I AM Presence and Great Ascended Host" for manifesting what I want. We all approach it differently.
For me, it's not religious as much as spiritual to whatever force you see out there on the other side guiding you.
As I said, I'll begin to share various affirmations I say, during the 20 minutes. Some are meant for all of us to say. Much of it is unique to our own journey.
Here's one paragraph: "This day I AM going to create my day. I'm going to live this day consciously, with courage, striving for a new thought, a new experience. I'm going to respect the sanctity of this day, that this day exists on its own, that this day is its own unique opportunity to discover, to reinvent, to thrive, and to heal, and to care for, love and respect myself, with peace and joy in my heart, and with courage."
