@Shawn Razak Going really well, my parents had some raised beds from two years back so I cleared those and added soil/compost/peat moss as seemed fit and build two more bigger ones. I have been harvesting radishes, lettuce, and spinach pretty heavily. I started tomatoes, peppers, peas, beans, inside and moved them outside a few weeks ago they’re doing well. I build tall beds so there is less bending involved and did some “hugelkulture” and filled the bottom with sticks, branches, leaves and hay to save soil. Doing some potatoes Ruth Stout style as well.

Man - there's a lot to be said about TN - I'm working on moving back there myself - I'm from Memphis - which ... do NOT go there... West and central TN are really flat, the cities are cess pools ... I need to get my house paid down - or maybe paid OFF and then I'm headed to east TN myself. I found a place that's about the same price as what I could get for my house on an acre in palm beach county - it was 120 acres nested between 2 mountains in ... I guess the foothills of the smokies? On maps it looks like a rake dragged from knoxville down south to chattanooga. Things you're going to want to take note of ... you're not going to get even close to Cali prices for your produce. Depending on how far you are from the farmers markets / largish cities - you're going to probably have higher transportation costs. The soil and climate is drastically different - I'm sure you're aware of that. Idk about east TN, but theres a LOT of clay in the region. You might want to consider tilling in something to make it more loamy and get organic matter down there - at least for round 1. That clay gets REALLY hard packed, doesn't hold water, aeration it terrible ... but - they grow a TON of stuff out there - it's not a barren wasteland. One thing you'll find awesome though - there is NO shortage of good clean water in TN. You can't walk 10 feet without tripping over a spring, or a creek. Overall it's a great place for a farm. Cost of living is fairly low, no income tax, generally relatively free of government interference - with some noteable exceptions. Check out Stoney Ridge Farmer - he's in NC, but pretty close - he's in the blue ridge mountains (which the smokies are part of I think). He's not a small farm, and he uses tillage, but he's in the right area - you can see what he deals with when he's tilling and clearing stuff. Beware the county you're going for though. Talk to people and see how crazy they are. one guy was complaining and everybody said he picked the wrong county - that they'd make you get a permit to add a padlock to a gate if they could - and they'd use their regulations to more or less extort you.

Chattanooga is a great area and cheaper land as compared to Nashville but the market is higher here. I’d love to come out and learn from you when you move to Chattanooga or if you come to Nashville we could have a local meet at one of the already established farms market just to show where its public form for all that want but also to learn from one another.

A lot of this information is great. One thing I have to say is zero-tillage is great if the soil in your area will allow it. Where I live, zero-tillage actually underperforms because the clay content is so high. Adding compost on top of the soil as a soil amendment is ok here, but it does not outperform the minimum tillage required to incorporate that compost into the soil.
@jonathanhart869
4 жыл бұрын
I also had a difficult time establishing a garden in a compacted clay-based soil. But I decided to fork the clay soil to a depth of over 12 inches to aerate it. I then added a mixture of at least a few inches of compost, an inch or so of manure, and some innoculated seed starting mix (2-3 inches) that has looser soil structure. From that point on (5 years later) I simply add a 1 inch layer of well degraded compost to the top of the garden in fall and in spring and don't have to till. Soil structure is great and all of the ammendments I included from the get go are integrating/settling well into the lower levels of forked clay via the initial broad forking, and the developing soil biology. Weed competition is very low, drainage and root penetration is good too without the addition of extra fertilizers or tilling. It was a lot of work initially but less work in the long run! I hope your chosen approach to clay soil gardening works for you. Every garden is different.

First off - kudos to what you've accomplished here. You have some truly amazing talent and creativity to build this self-sustaining backyard farm and your garden looks beautiful! I'm a bit confused how this is profitable though. Even if you did $1,000/week consistently throughout the entire year, in San Diego your monthly cost/sqft of land has to be at least $3000. Subtract from that water, equipment, feed, gas to travel to farmers markets, labor, etc. and I have a hard time visualizing how you'd have any positive cash flow remaining.

You’re absolutely awesome. Thanks for sharing your journey. Gonna go hunt for your jadam video since it’s not linked. Really enjoyed your bokashi tutorial as well. Working on setting up a victory garden in our HOA and going to be using a lot that I’ve learned from you and epic. Going to be teaching about bokashi, vermiculture, and doing some hot composting as well just to bring in some community interest, reduce footprint stuff, but it sounds like buying in fertility will be the way to go to get started. Thanks again for all you do and share. Glad to know you’ll still be sharing your journey. Good luck on the next leg.

I just found your channel a few days ago and am so surprised to hear that you're moving to Chattanooga! I live in Chattanooga and I hope you love the local food scene as much as I do. Definitely check out the Main St Farmers Market if you haven't already. :)

I’m still at the point where it’s challenging to make things live and grow, must be very tough to give up all those beautiful crops

Change is always hard. Sometimes you have to give up what you have built to invest in something with higher ceiling of growth. It helps that in this case, success is pretty much entirely determined by hard work. With enough willpower and hard work, any land can be made fertile. The plants themselves are just a product of that relationship with the land. He isn't giving up beautiful crops. He's giving up less land for more land. And with his hard work input, that "more land" is most likely going to be a great investment.

Welcome to Tennessee we moved here a year ago to start our little homestead. We are about 25 minutes outside Memphis. Not sure where you are heading but shoot us a message if you ever need anything. Good luck.

I just bought those grow bags from Bootstrap, and they were not a 5 g bags, I got a replacement and the same thing, I email the owner and to this day He has not send me a return label. He did send the excuse that the bags are really not 5 gallons but 3,! So please do not advertise them! Im in Texas, knew about his company a long time ago, so I am very disappointed! Why are you moving to TN?.....? is your wife korean? I seen your channel since you started and I applaud you, with this pandemic, finally people are understanding, that we need to be more responsible about what we do to the environment and grow your own food!
