Part 2: This was a good highlight, though they left out all the arts that we do, we might recreate artifacts, but it should be specified that we do this using a blow torch and our hands. (Particularly talking about glass beads and metal smithing, my favorite activities) We don't just go on eBay and buy bead, etc. that are kind of close to what we want and use them. We make what we want, and do so using the method used 600 years ago.

As someone who has been in the SCA for a long time, a couple comments. Yes, the SCA isn't entirely historically accurate- but that also means it is easier for new people to get started w/ out costing a fortune. You can be as accurate as you choose to be. Some major advantages and disadvantages to that. Second- the people and sense of community are what keep us coming back. The history and education and activities are wonderful, but it is the people that make it great.

SCA uses a motto, "We're not trying to hurt our friends, we're trying to kill them." It's a blend of European martial arts and a fencing-style score system, what they mean is that they try to 'kill' the other person according to the rules and the rules exist to protect participants from serious injury. You're right, the weapons aren't strictly accurate but it allows for more people to enjoy the sport without serious risk. Check out Russian Paladin LARP if you want hardcore steel weapons or EMP.

"The 15th century “Book of Tournaments” refers to using “a rebated sword such as is used in a tourney” and stated that both the sword and club should not exceed the length of one arm. “It should be four fingers wide, so that it cannot pass through the eye-slot of the helm, and the two edges ought to be as thick as a finger’s thickness. And so that it will not be too heavy, it should be hollowed out in the middle and rebated in front and all in one piece from the crosspiece to the end.”

This SCA stuff looks pretty awesome, yeah. I, myself almost joined the SCA but I figured I'd go for the NVG(New Varangian Guard) instead. It's a smaller group, so we don't have the massive, awesome fights like the SCA does, but we use very different equipment. We use steel weapons and periodically accurate equipment, but we have to be thoroughly trained so we don't smack each other up D: Also, we let anyone train, but they've gotta be 16 - and authorised - before they can fight in public :D

I have been involved in the SCA off and on since the late 1970's. The England college of heralds consulting the SCA college has been part of the lore for most of that time. I would need to contact the SCA college, but I heard it while hanging out with heralds. I can tell you the SCA does take this sort of research very seriously, mainly because they tend to be rather OCD nerds and are compelled for accuracy. Do I have specific proof of cases? No, but the veracity is high. Next event I go to ..

Continued, further demonstrating the validity of SCA's rattan wasters taped up to look like weapons: "A more or less informal and friendly type of tournament fight was the Behourd, which frequently used wooden or rebated swords or even ones made out of whalebone (which were sometimes given leather guards and decorated to make them appear like steel blades). These combats were mostly fought between esquires or knights in training."
