About this Webinar:
In the grassland biome, local biological relationships among habitat structure, insect and bird populations interact strongly with large-scale influences such as soil type and climate. The Multi-taxa Project, coordinated by the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation and funded by the Weston Family Foundation explores these interactions by measuring range health, bird and insect abundance and diversity on overlapping plots. We found that bird diversity is positively correlated with insect abundance, but the relationship between insects and vegetation varies by Ecosite. Scientists from SODCAP, Birds Canada, and the Canadian Wildlife Federation will describe the project, and these preliminary findings from data collected on native grasslands in southwestern Saskatchewan.
About the Speakers:
Dr. John Wilmshurst is the Native Grassland Conservation Manger with the Canadian Wildlife Federation. He is an adjunct professor in Geography and Planning at the University of Saskatchewan with 30 years of research, monitoring, and communications on grassland ecology and conservation. Among other project, he coordinates the CWF's activities in the SSGF and Weston Family Foundation Multi-taxa Project and the SODCAP Living Labs-Central Prairies Project.
Dr. Diego Steinaker is a Biologist with the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program (SODCAP Inc.), with 25 years of experience in ecology and management of temperate grasslands of South and North America. At SODCAP, Diego works with ranchers and other organizations on the development and implementation of rangeland conservation and restoration programs in southwestern Saskatchewan.
Dr. Kevin Hawkshaw is the Prairie Program Biostatistics Analyst with Birds Canada, using data to support the conservation of grassland birds and their habitats on the working landscapes of the Canadian Prairies. Central to his work is the development of the Bird-friendliness Index, a bioindicator used to measure the value of working landscapes for grassland birds. He also supports the SSGF Multi-taxa Project and the SODCAP Living Labs-Central Prairies Project.
PCAP’s Native Prairie Speaker Series is a monthly webinar about prairie conservation or species at risk.
