Very clear and comprehensive and well filmed. The only addition I do is that after cleaning and drilling any pin holes I tend to give the mini a quick once over by dipping it in a jar of water+ a tiny amount of dish soap and give it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush to get rid of any dust debris or grease

Nice instructional video. You might have mentioned like any other clear coating, make sure the area where you are drying the part is dust and pollen free. Sometimes I place the parts under a plastic tub (cool whip, margarine, etc) with one side slightly lifted to keep the particles off but let the air in.

That's a good point, especially with PFG. Definitely cover your work while letting it dry to avoid dust, errant hairs (especially if you have pets!), and the like from getting caught in the clear coat.

Great tip! I use a similar product, i think, (HG, parquet protector: nr 51, available in Europe) and found it also works great as a flow improver when hand painting with acrylics. it has a lower surface tension than water. a drop of water with paint will create a dome and deposit the pigments along the edge, this stuff will lay much flatter and distribute the pigments more evenly over the area. i've used it with good result to brush paint details, entire surfaces, in weathering to create rain streaks and mud mixes with pigments, but also as glazes on navigation lights and when painting large scale figures.

Awesome video!!! Often read about this technique in various magazines and such but NEVER actually seen the process in action!!! Do not know why but NEVER tried this technique nor did it really make any sense either. Now that have seen it in action, definitely gained a better understanding of the process and reasoning for this technique - will just have to give this a try.

Good information. When I am thinking about using a product I know nothing about, I always hope FSM has something on the subject. I was always leery about this product in particular. Now I know it is simply a pure- basically- acrylic coat and nothing else, I will give it a try. I have seen modellers using this for years but thought it was "gimmicky". Good to know I now have another item in my tool box. Thanks for the review Aaron. Best wishes from the hills of Virginia, sir! Cork

This is a great video! I’m currently working on an F-14 and the canopy has gotten a little scratched so I would love to try this technique to improve the appearance. I’ve already glued a photo-etch rear view mirror on the canopy and it’s already painted and got a decal on it, can I still dip it in future (or an equivalent product) or is it too late at this point?

One thing I have wondered... when I was in the Army we used to cheat on our dress boots by painting them with Mop and Glow... It made them look like a mirror polish. Has anyone ever tried using this instead of the Pledge? I seem to have trouble finding the Pledge. BTW, I strip mine by dipping in 90% alcohol. Let soak a few minutes and it strips it off.

Would you paint the canopy frame before or after applying the floor wax? If after, can you mask the canopy without the tape removing some of the floor wax? Thanks.

After. In fact, the masks come away from the parts easier than they do over bare plastic. The masks will not remove the acrylic.

We have heard the same thing--that is has been discontinued. As you mention, it is still available for now, and it is possible that J&J may rebrand it as something else. But it is still a technique available to modelers. As for an alternate product that behaves similarly, we have not yet found it. If we do, we'll test it and report back.

Definitely works well on clear parts. There is some debate whether it should be used over paint, white or otherwise, due to potential yellowing. Some modelers swear by PFG, others swear it off.

Dip your part first and let the clear dry completely under a protective cover to keep out dust and other particulates. Then you can mask and paint your frame and other details.

Is there a reason for not using a brush to "paint" it on? kindest regards.
@FineScaleModelermagazine
2 жыл бұрын
Uneven application is the biggest reason. Some modelers use PFG as a clear gloss before applying decals to their models, and, if they do, they will airbrush it on. Again, looking for consistent coverage without causing runs.

Can you dip painted parts without causing the paint to crinkle?
@FineScaleModelermagazine
2 жыл бұрын
It is an acrylic-based product, so paints are typically unaffected by it. However, make sure you want whatever part you're dipping to be glossy. Also, if the part is large, you probably don't want to dip it because the coverage will be thicker than you'd like. If you're looking to use PFG as a clear gloss, then airbrushing is the way to go. We've had many articles that show that technique in FineScale Modeler over the years.

Only, glass isn’t realistic, because aircraft canopies are not made of glass. Actually, if it’s truly realistic, it will be crazed (scratched) so it should never look crystal clear. Regards, Mr. Buzzkill
