Can you use this technique when the final coat is black, do I reverse the colours, ie, white to black?

I have never tried it that way but I would imagine is the same thing just reversed. The idea is to get random tones throughout the panel.

Karen F you mean that annoying music on the background? You know the one nobody has complained about?

Blackbasing and preshading is nothing more than artistic licence. It doesn’t exist on real aircraft. Complete waste of time.

Im an aircraft mechanic, so I’ll respectfully disagree. Even if you think is a waste of time, its up to the modeler to do whatever he or she wants with it.

Can you show us a real aircraft where the paint has been badly applied and showing mottling so we can compare it with this then?
