Callas was in the audience that night, if I remember. She disappeared from her seat after this, as Souliotis was going to withdraw from the performance. She gave her some encouragement backstage, we found out later on, and Souliotis did much better in the final scenes. Callas thought she was an extremely gifted artist. This role is pure hell if you don't have all of your "possibilities" and I do mean every last, bloody one of them. This duet alone is something Netrebko could never ever understand the rhythms of.

I was also there and it was certainly a wild night. Suliotis was disappointing that night but having Callas, Milanov and a host of other singers in the audience did not help her. I remember Milanov coming down the aisle in her mink coat just as the lights were going down which drew more applause and delayed the start. This duet went pretty badly with two mismatched voices. Not a lesson in bel canto. After the booing (reportedly aimed at Tatum or done by Callas fans because she was there) she clearly did not want to continue and when she finally returned there was a total change in her. She looked angry and determined. When Norma summons the Druids she unleashed the loudest high note I think I have ever heard. She finished the opera very well and its a shame an off night gets blown up way above what really happened because of the bad behavior of some in the audience. Like her or don't but don't fault her because she isn't someone else. I like her for the excitement she brought despite a flawed technique and poor career management.

You are right on target...she did arrive long after the audience had filled up. I remember her striding down the aisle to her seat with her claque clapping and shouting...only to be followed by Tebaldi who received the same adulation...though her seat was not way up front as was Milanovs and thus her entrance was not so grand ....but the truth is they were both upstaged by Callas who arrived even later with Onassis. She acknowledged the full house, most of which was standing with their back to the stage facing her and screaming and applauding. At a certain point she started throwing red roses down to the audience. ...after all of this poor Suliotis had to come on stage and sing !!!! Her nerves were probably more than killing her !!!!

Madame Callas would have loved all the controversy expressed on this page - even by the detractors. She herself said, "There are those who think I have a great voice and others who think I have nothing. My advice to those who don't like my art is to just not bother with it. If I don't like something, I ignore it." There were no luke-warm Callas people. Her art was looked upon as a revelation by most, and a big lie by a vocal minority of others. Time has already made the judgement, which is why her records are still making money and her work is still studied by many singers. No one can hurt her anymore with their brick-bats. She's in operatic Valhalla.

@vincenzomesseri3433: The night you reference was when the MET had a benefit for the deaf. Since they couldn’t hear they thought Netrebko was great. Now, when the MET had a benefit for the blind, and they could hear, there was no applause.

It sounds to me like the problems occurred mostly because it was under-rehearsed.

People keep saying that some singers don't have "a good technique". I am sure they don't have any idea what they are talking about. It was a bad night for Souliotis, just that. Perhaps insufficient rehearsal.

I think both Netrebko and Souliotis went on stage before their technical training was complete: Netrebko because she was so beautiful and such a stage animal with a naturally gorgeous voice, and Souliotis because of her wonderful natural voice and the need for a "New Callas." Netrebko was luckier in that she started in the lighter lyric/coloratura roles, although her coloratura technique was always lacking. Souliotis was thrown unwisely into the dramatic soprano roles before her technique was complete, and she burned through her principal and her nerves far too fast. Even now, when I hear Netrebko sing roles such as Lady Macbeth, I hear shadows of Souliotis.

Tatum made the mistake in the duet...Suliotis is amazing in the rest of the opera - faults and all...

I think this is the most disgusting behavior of any public listening to opera ! Shame on them ! They even didn-t realise Tatum was out of pitch not Souliotis ! Ignorants !

I saw Nancy Tatum do a fabulous Santuzza in the mid-60s with the Houston Grand Opera on tour and she was magnificent. Everyone has off nights and although this was a big off night, I still think she was a fine singer and shouldn't be remembered for one night.

I was there that night...in the audience was Callas. She sat in a box with Onassis. They arrived after Tebaldi and Zinka Milanov who sat in the audience. I seem to remember her throwing a rose down to the audience. ...A hard act for Suliotis to follow ...a trifecta of Normas in the audience. It was a shocking moment when Suliotis voice just stopped. Nothing came out.. She walked off the stage and after stunned moments she was followed by the chorus . It was a sad but memorable night...a career destroyed in front of our eyes
@andity1
I don't think this performance deserves to be booed. Probably she was nervous with so many opera icons in the public. And after all not every day your voice is fireworks. She might be out of tune in some places and couldn't sing her high notes well, but she gave a decent performance. With the standards now she was simply great

L'ho vista personalmente a Roma nel 1969. Semplicemente GRANDIOSA !!! Nessuna era Norma così, non se l'abbiamo a male i fans della Callas, grandissima Norma, ma la voce di Elena era ancora più bella. L'aveva detto la stessa Callas

As a stage performer and singer, I would be absolutely appalled by this kind of audience behavior. It's ironic as a young person to me to hear people scream and jabber on about how "today's audiences have no respect for the performers and talk and whatnot throughout shows," and yet they thought this was completely normal activity back in the 1960s. I know Opera is, in many ways, a much more "cultured" art than musical theatre is, but... If this audience response is "culture," thank God I'm in the dregs of the musical comedy.
