"Goodbye To You" was introduced to me in late 1982 on the radio, it was a new wavy sounding tune and Patty Smyth's kick ass vocals got my attention. The woman could wail! She proved it with their next single "The Warrior" released on June 30, 1984 peaking at #7 pop during the hottest part of the summer.
Zack Smith had played guitar with Davey Johnson and Dee Murray, Elton John's side men and in 1982 formed a band called Scandal. On the hunt for a vocalist, he met Patty but the audition turned into a shouting match when it took too long and was poorly set up. Once they cooled, off Zack realized he found his singer and brought her on.
Patty, Zack Smith, Keith Mack, Ivan Elias and Tommy Price were Scandal for the first release, an EP. They then opened for the tours of Hall & Oates, John Cougar Mellencamp and The Kinks which helped to build interest in the band. When Columbia Records released the EP, they reported it had become the biggest EP in their history and they booked the band a studio to complete and album on their dime.
While the band started breaking up during these sessions, they did manage to complete "The Warrior", which became their only hit as the follow ups were not as popular and Scandal went adrift, scattering to the four winds.
Patty sang with The Hooters for "Where Do The Children Go" a #18 hit that caught the attention of Van Halen, who reached out to have her replace David Lee Roth. Smyth declined, and now she feels regretful. I have to agree with her there, if she had joined the band, it would have been phenomenal! But she stayed solo and the subsequent album "Never Enough" did not do well.
She was not able to put together a Scandal album as band members each wandered off and finally Patty pulled the plug, left Columbia records and signed with MCA.
For her second LP, she recruited Eagle Don Henley to join her for a song she had written called "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough". The emotional performances peaked at #2 and were not able to end the reign of Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road". Not for a lack of trying though, it stayed put at #2 for six weeks.
