First: Temporarily making the top image partially transparent or changing its merge mode to Multiply will make it much easier to do a perfect placement of the overlap. Second: Never erase a part of the picture you might need. Use a layer mask to hide the part of the overlap with the shadow.

under layers, there is a button called layer mask, it does exactly what you've done apart from its not destructive and you can easily go back on yourself.

Woah, didn't know about that erasure trick. I've been tediously using the cloning tool and healing brush tool to get rid of those lines, but no longer!

You do know there is a built in feature that will do it all for you. File > Automate > Photomerge...
