Detailed discussion of the integrated function of shoulder complex. The integrated function of shoulder complex involves integrated function at the joints and integrated function by muscles. Function by joints involves the contribution by the scapulothoraic, glenohumeral, sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joints. The function by scapulothoraicic and glenohumeral joints are decribed by the term scapulohumeral rhythm.
The scapulohumeral rhythm describes a 2:1 ratio that exist between the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints in shoulder complex function particularly in elevation. The relative contribution by glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints helps in achieving the maximum range of motion at the shoulder complex. For a 180 degree range of motion the glenohumeral joint contributes about 120 degree and 60 degree by scapula.
The motions of scapula that contribute to glenohumeral motions of elevation includes, the upward rotation, the posterior tilting, internal and external rotation, protraction and elevation.
