The upturn or the rocker angle is for ease of walking. It allows for stiffness but also isn’t going to impede walking. The boot is fairly highly rated in reviews for mountaineering purposes. Looks like a versatile boot, it will take a c2 crampon and can do winter mountaineering, however I don’t think it’s a full on serious winter mountaineering boot as such. That said if it was stiffer and had less of a rocker angle like some b2 and any B3 boot then it probably wouldn’t be as comfortable in walking those long distances you want to cover.

Great review. I’ve just purchased a pair and they’re very comfortable for my wide feet given they’re relative stiffness. An easy fix for the lacing and tongue issue is to use the supplied lace to tie off the forefoot where the metal loops finish, then a separate lace in the hooks for ankle tightness - works well.

Wide feet are relative. I used to wear Meindls and I couldn't get comfortable in these Ribelles. I didn't have a problem with waterproofing (never have with an Outdry shoe) but they rubbed up against my little toes such that they were unwearable. The fit looked so similar to the Scarpa Zodiac Techs I love but in practice these didn't work for me at all. I have found this too many times with Scarpa. Great tech but the fit is inconsistent and they have so many lasts that I never know what fit I'm going to get. I suspect I will return to German brands which cater more to hobbit footed persons who still like to hillwalk and climb.

I have a pair of Mammut alto guide gtx which has similar curve i think is designed to reduce stress and fatigue in the ankle and calf muscles and transfer it to the glutes/hamstrings but i have found this also transfers the fatigue to the hip flexor muscles at the front of the hip because it actually drops the knee/leg slightly lower each step.

I just compared the upturn with things like the Bouler X or Hoka running show and they don't seem dissimilar. Normally there is a mid sole that tapers towards the front so the upturn isn't as obvious but with the Ribelle, the rand upturns as much as the sole, making it appear to be more aggressive (at least that's my take)

Makes sense. I do think some upturn is needed however with this boot it felt a bit much. Still love the boot though overall.

Thanks a lot for the review! I have questions about the sizing and fit. What size did you buy compared to your street shoe size (e.g. sole size vs. Mondo point? Do the boots feel tight in the forefoot and the toes (or can they conform to the foot after a while)?
@robertesell

Thanks! I take a size 9 US and they are pretty true to size. I find they fit snug but not tight. They have a nice toe box that is wide enough but the heel is snug. You really need to try them on and test it out but for my feet they work well. I tend to have a wide toe box.

@@robertesell Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! I have never worn this type of boot and the snug fit had unfamiliar feel. I bought one euro size up my regular ones (US 9) and was wondering about it. I'm more reassured now and I'll keep them (I like them very much).

Hello. Very nice review for these boots. I consider to buy them also You said that other boots have a system to separate the lacing tension between lower part and higher area. Can you tell me some of them? Thank you

Most of my higher end mountaineering boots have that. Also my Arcteryx boots I recently reviewed on this channel have that as well.

Thanks for the great review! I´m considering on buying those boots. What do you think about waterproofness? I´ve read some very bad comments about it.

I think the water proofing is adequate for most uses however not ideal if you are expecting a lot of moisture. These are my three season boots for Spring, Summer and Fall. For winter I would wear more water proof boots as we get a lot of rain here. If I knew I was going to be doing glacier travel or other potential water sources I might consider my mountaineering boots for more protection.

You can do a half surgeons knot between the last eyelet and the first speed lace to adjust the tightness independently

Great suggestion. I am a huge fan of doing that and do that on my approach shoes. I find it does work well on those. I will try it on these. Thanks!

Hey Robert, excellent and informative review. Question for you - when you ordered it online, how were you size wise? Did you follow the sizing guide on Scarpa's website and order accordingly or did you have to size up or down from your street shoe size and or regular hiking boots size? Thanks.
@robertesell

The sizing was accurate to my foot. I always take a 9 and these fit perfect. I dont think you would normally need to size up or down. Having said that, I also think being able to go into the store and try on is so much better than just blind ordering. Just make sure you can return without a hassle if they dont fit.

So far the wear and tear has been pretty good. I think this is because it is suede and not synthetic. Normally those boots start to go where the fabric meets the rubber sole.

These boots looked so great I bought them. They tear my Achilles heel to pieces after a few miles so it’s bleeding and torn and I can’t walk for weeks. They are kind of garbage. Not as bad as the Ribelle techs which are the worst POS I’ve ever wasted $$$ on. Scarpa kind of sucks imo. Looks great but don’t work. Techs have no waterproof ness whatsoever and the dumb sock part rips and they take days and days to dry. The HD just gouge massive craters in my heels it’s so disappointing idk what to do because I like them overall wish I could make them work
