Nicopolis ad Istrum was a city built in 106 AD. in honor of the victory of the Romans over the Dacians at Ister. Ister was the name given to the area in the lower reaches of the Danube River. Its creation is associated with the emperor Marcus Ulpius Trajan, who called himself one of the good emperors and under his rule the empire flourished. Nicopolis ad Istrum reached its peak of development in the middle of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd century. Its location is not accidental at all, and thanks to it, it becomes one of the important centers for the entire region. The road from Odessos, today's Varna, and to Serdika, today's Sofia, passed through it. To the south of it went the road crossing an old mountain and leading to Kabyle and then Byzantium, today's Istanbul.
It is believed that in the past, Thracians who were not used to an urban lifestyle and Roman veterans looking for a suitable place to live out their old days settled here. There were also settlers from other more distant parts of the empire such as Asia Minor for example. An interesting fact is that although Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman city, Greek was mostly spoken here and deities such as Zeus, Hera, Athena and others were worshipped, although the empire considered them pagan. You have to keep in mind that we are talking about times long before the proto-Bulgarians entered these territories. These lands were under the control of the Roman Empire. In the beginning, the city did not even have fortress walls because around the 2nd century there was not so much tension in the Balkans. However, after several attacks and looting of the kostoboks, the administration was forced to build such and their remains when they can be seen today. They were about 8 meters high, and the towers reached 12 meters. All in all, it was a heavily fortified city of high importance to the empire.
