Scavengers reign is the best animated thing that I could’ve wished for, a dream come true, a true comfort show. I refuse to understand why some people seem not to like it. Just look at how beautiful this is, I haven’t felt this way since I watched Nausicaa for the first time.

i watched the entire thing today, right as it dropped on Netflix. i think my absolute favorite part is how it presents alien nature. in other media, this alien life might be simply terrifying, or awe-inspiring, but Scavengers Reign makes it both. it's not fair or unfair, it's not malicious or kind, it just is. it is existing like all nature does, cycling through ecosystems. Ursula's comment in episode 3: "It's not a waste of time." sums it up the best. this show is about symbiosis and mutualism. things only work when they work together. it's one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen and i love it so much.

Still can't get over that plant that steals your DNA and makes a clone of you. That shit terrified me more than most horror movies and that weird cuthulu virus too. One of the more grounded ones that was still so scary in concept were those water monkey things that grabbed Ursula with its tail and climbed up its own tail to get her

the reason why the big one wasn't killed, i think, it's because of the whole allegory surrounding his character. I think that it's an obvious allegory about depression, Kamen kept feeding his depression until it consumed him, and was in the way out of self destruction until Levi showed him an outside perspective that shook his core and allowed him to have a catharsis and separate himself from his depression, the big one didn't dissapear, because depression is not something that goes away, it simply transformed back into something Kamen could manage, but it's still there

I liked that Ursula was wearing Sam’s shirt in the end, there’s no proof of that, but I like to think she went back for it. About Sam’s shirt. I might be wrong but it may be that it was part of a regulation uniform. Since he passed away and gave Ursula his captain’s card before he did, Ursula inherited the role as captain. She’s probably not wearing Sam’s clothes so much as she is clothes with the rank a captain. Again, I could be wrong.

SR was a breath of fresh air for me. It married philosophical and scientific concepts into a thoroughly satisfying and beautiful adventure. The creature's stalking Azi and others gave me The Terror polar bear vibes. I didn't quite get how the creature survived Levi's attack though, and reverted to its original form. For me that was jarring and not consistent with the believability of the world, bordering on magic, which isn't something I though the show was going for. Basically, it should have died. Levi's return was also somewhat miraculous, but still in keeping within the limits of plausibility, given how the 'Soulflower' seemed to be imbued with sentience, will and extremely quick evolutionary potential. So much to comment on. Amazing show. Deserves widespread recognition.

The Levi baby at the end grew from the flower - just like others. We watch Levi pull one of those flowers up, even! Very simple. I'm still trying to think about the significance of the fact that they all want to get back to Demeter - and I don't mean the ship. Demeter was a goddess of the harvest, and earthen fertility, and was the mother of Persephone. I feel like that's tied into the whole overarching story's theme.

LOVED IT. There’s definitely violence, but most of it comes from not understanding life on another planet, instead of the stupid kind with huge guns, bullets flying and going to war over resources and religion, just an overall gruesomeness of dystopian violence that’s been thrown at us. Here, there are real human interactions as the basis for the storyline, instead of the aforementioned final showdown of vomit inducing killings and murder. You even find yourself hoping the “bad guys” get killed. I hate that. With this series you find yourself having HOPE for ALL the characters. I say, get rid of the shoot ‘em out westerns in space, e.g., Star Wars…Blade Runner…Avatar and yes, even Star Trek and sooooo many others.

From the visuals feeling like an organic expression of Evangelion to the raw brutality of the organic world, which isn’t really brutality as it’s simply nature. Scavengers Reign stimulates so much thought, wonder and hope of more to come. If you watch the original pilot of the show, you can see where the creators have polished and expanded on the themes and concepts, making a (as noted) truly original sci-fi story that will likely be a benchmark for future influence. I have a great love for sci-fi, live-action and animated alike; and found myself at two points throughout the series, sitting upright, fixated on the tv with my jaw a-gasp…can count on one hand the times that’s happened to me in my life at 40. And side note, I really want to support this. But HBO max isn't in Australia. We have something called Binge. A streaming service owned by Foxtel that they very lazily put together because they needed a platform. And oh boy does it show. The Cartoon Network shows still have that watermark, and still have the bumpers. Showing that they just recorded the TV and uploaded it. But worse is the crashes and stuttering. The survivors of the Demeter are pilgrims, crash landing and blending in their surroundings. By end of season, they’ve found a balance between life and death, with the planet holding the scales. They’ve adapted. Meanwhile, we’re introduced to a cult of scavengers, finding Kris, yet another scavenger. They look diseased, suffering from leprosy. These scavengers are not subscribers to balance. They are determined to be the ones to hold the balance. Perhaps if a second season is greenlit, we see a conflict between Survivors and Scavengers (and future scavenger types for that matter). Maybe the the survivors of the Demeter lose the good fight, as is a numbers game, but future scavengers continue their press into this new world.
