This was when people first really noticed Busta but LONS second album T.I.M.E was when Busta really found his style and flow. It's the first time we hear the Busta we know now. I remember the first time I heard the song "Syntax Era" I knew he was going solo. Lol

Hip-Hop started off with emcees rhyming over instrumentals. In the early 80s, Russell Simmons stripped everything down to just an emcee and a beat around 82. (Sucker MCs) This was Boom Bap. Then came heavy James Brown samples late 80s (Erik B & Rakim) and then heavy jazz samples (ATCQ, De La, Gang Starr, etc) ATCQ was at the front of what people call the Golden Era of Hip-Hop.

LONS (Leaders Of The New School) were part of that whole official/unofficial Native Tounges collective [Jungle Bros., Monnie Luv, De La, Tribe...] Busta got stapled wit the "Dragon" moniker from tis song. Yeah, he was always the standout. Busta is arguably the only guys in hip hop THAT consistent for THAT long. Him and Q-Tip always collaborated thru the years- Lotta chemistry.

Busta was part of a group named Leader Of The New School. (LONS) He and another member Charlie Brown never got along and have spent many years not even speaking to one another. Busta would hang out with A Tribe Called Quest (ATCQ) a lot and would feature every so often. LONS only had two albums and by the second album The Inner Minds Eye (T.I.M.E), Busta was well on his way to a solo career. Listen to the song "Syntax Era" to hear the moment he transcended LONS. The rest of the group, Milo, Dinco D, and Charlie Brown never had any success outside of LONS.

Y'all should consider having an interpreter who breaks down the lyrics and meaning after you've heard the song. I say this because there are soooo many social, cultural, and geographical nuances in rap, that total outsiders (such as yourselves) have no idea what's being said or why. It would help put things in perspective. Without a "guide" into this world you're like a deaf person commenting on classical music, you feel a little bit of the vibration but have no idea of the true complexity of the composition. I appreciate what you guys are doing👍

Subject of Song: 🤔🤔🤔... Those old school "posse cuts" are a list art. Think of rappers [then] as lead guitarists. So rather than a straightforward theme, u got guys laying down these epic riffs they'd been crafting. Your essentially watching Jimi, Keith, Clapton, Terry Reid, a so forth sitting in at a Zeplin club gig promoted by say... a Rick Rubin or a Butch Vig.

Yeah this was when the energy was more upbeat, innovative, and usually positive or conscious. Then when the private prison complex started emerging, the overpromotion of gangster rap was done to help fill the prisons. There's a famous video of exec not showing his face explaining it and how they could get stocks and stuff out of it. But yeah Old School up to 93 was fantastic and balanced out gangster.

It's the 90s East-Coast hip hop vibe. Totally different than west coast rap of the same era. East coast beats were all heavily jazz influenced and sampled vs their west coast counterpart which was very synthy and overly produced sounding. EC hip-hop artists were also more poetically lyrical and their rhymes just flowed much smoother and naturally. EC hip-hop lyrics are laced strongly with rhymes that rely on quick wit, wordplay and metaphors. (and more times than not they also feature far less vulgarity, obscenity and derogatory statements than the WC rappers integrated into their music) i.e. NWAs "straight outta compton", "fuck the police" or tupac's "I don't give a fuck". A lot of drugs, slanging, banging and racial profiling in 90s WC rap music. Personally, I'm 100% about the old school East-Coast, (NYC more specifically) hip hop music and don't like any of the WC shit. (Tupac has some alright tracks, and I got mad respect for his style and what he brought to the early rap scene). Check out Gang Starr, Mos Def, Big L (very brilliant and untouchable in his freestyle flows but EXTREMELY vulgar and crazy obscene lyrics though), Crooklyn Dodgers, Digable Planets, MF DOOM and Nas. Those are just a few of my personal favorites that I think y'all would like if you like Tribe.

I dunno about yall but hearing someone call a group of rappers a "band" is like nails on a chalkboard. Band: a small group of musicians and vocalists who play pop, jazz, or rock music. Its sorta like if a electrician said him sister in law was part of a crochet guild, the word simply doesn't apply. A better word might just be group? Or if you wanna get an even bigger umbrella term ensemble is always up for grabs. Pet peeve of mine that ultimate amounts to bothing but boy does it get under my skin
