Those additional scenes required a new Plymouth Valiant (1972 model) and a new tractor-trailer (1962 Peterbilt ? I'm not up on my tractors), as both were destroyed in the original (two Valiants were used, a 1970 with V8 and a 1971 with the 225 six). Another note regarding the added footage; the collapsed flyover ramp of the inbound 14 at inbound Golden State I-5 can be seen briefly in the background when the Valiant's driver transitions from northbound I-5 to northbound CA 14 during the opening vignette. That flyover ramp collapsed during the *1971* *Sylmar* *Earthquake* -- the same flyover which would collapse *again* during the *1994* *Northridge* *Earthquake* .

@@Sadwilly disagree everything sucks now. Smaller cars. Less flashy cars. Shorter gas mileage. Less entertaining high ways. Small buissness is being destroyed in some places. Music was better it’s just fact there are some good songs ranging from 2000-2017 but everything that came after is garbage even rap and rock have gotten bad but in terms that the songs cuss too much. Occasional cussing is fine. Hell I cuss when it finds a place in my sentences. But excessive cussing ain’t right. Makes the song drag on and does not make a lick of since. But of coarse when I say “flashy cars” I’m not referring to the late 70’s or anything after. That gas crisis did a number on cars for a long time everything from before was great but not under 1939 cause that’s when cars were still somewhat new even though the first mass produced car the model T was built in 1911. I think fact check me cause at the time I am weighting this I don’t have time to do it myself. I can keep going and these are all just my insights and opinions.

In the 70s I had my wife and three kids in the car. We had been camping at Radium B.C. and had gone for a drive. Returning to the camp we had to pass through a valley with rock walls on both sides and only two lanes. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a white semi running right up our butt. He pushed us so I had to speed up. Finally he passed us just before the narrowest part on solid line on the road. When we got there cars on the left side were hugging the rock wall. The semi and trailer were all white with no company or lease name visible. If this truck was out of control he could have used one of the runaway lanes but didn't. The strange part is the fact that after getting through the rocks he was immediately in the Radium townsite. And just outside the opposite end of the town the road came to a dead end that required a right or left turn. I stopped for gas and the attendant had seen the truck barreling through town so how he made a turn remains at mystery. He certainly scared the hell out of all of us. So I always remember our Duel. I have spoken to former truck drivers and one of them confessed to me that a car was stopping at the top of a hill forcing him to downshift many times. He finally put him in a ditch. All I am saying is that when on the road be courteous and stay away from trucks. For older drivers like myself, and you can't drive at the speed limit, safely, pull over and let them by. Don't be a jerk and expect the whole world to slow down for you. When you do bad things can happen. Also, when embarking on a long distance drive make sure your car or truck or van is in the best condition possible. Don't worry about being cost effective. Do what you have to do to bring it up to specs. It might save your life.

95mph being chased by a truck would of been so frightening to experience if it happened in real life.

E-frihgin-specially back then, that car probably felt like it was flying apart at those speeds. It was pretty unheard of for a lot of cars back then.

Even though his face is never shown, Carey Loftin as the truck driver is one of my all time favorite movie villains! He has no apparent motivation, no dialogue, and no backstory. He's just a psychopath! That's it!

Facts, and I always thought of all those license plates on the front bumper as like his "trophys" of his other road victims. Great psychological thriller!

@@casanovafrankenstein8538 Yup. Same with the Predator and Mick Taylor from "Wolf Creek"! Keeping trophies of their victims adds to the creep factor of movie villains so much!!

@@casanovafrankenstein8538 I’ve just re-watched this scene and had the same thought…David’s license plate is next. I don’t know much about US plates. Possibly they are from a wide range of locations suggesting a demented murderous road trip across the states.

Apparently, in the first draft of the script, the car driver suddenly pulls over in a lay by when he first becomes aware of the truck tailing him. The truck is travelling at high speed, so the car driver just turns around and travels back to where he set off from.

There were two of these trucks for the movie. One got crashed in the over the cliff scene and the other still is around. It’s in South Carolina in a private collection.

Shot in 13 days, displaying cinematic quality despite being made for TV. This movie gripped me when I was a wee kid. The shot of Weaver at the end sat alone in the sunset throwing stones left a lasting impression. There's a touch of sadness and melancholy after his 'victory'

I think there's a scene where the car driver is arguing with his wife on the phone: always wondered if she had something to do with the trucker trying to take him out.

I've seen this movie countless times, know the ending. Every time it gets to the scene where Weaver's car overheats as he's going up the hill, with the truck barreling down on him, I find myself getting up pacing the floor, saying "He's not going to get away!" I'm practically screaming at the car with Weaver!
