Downtown New Orleans on a Saturday night can be a most dangerous place. Too many have gone there and not lived to see Sunday afternoon. I, personally, know of three young and promising millennials. Between the DRAM laws in Louisiana - that are lacking in preventing excessive intoxication compared to the overwhelming majority of the other States in this country - and the potential for criminal activity, there is no wonder that these tragedies happen. But the rest of the country loves to come here to the “CIty That Care Forgot” to get a little wild for a while before they take their flights back home to often safer places. This was a big football game celebration, but the environment of Downtown New Orleans remains the same. I can only caution our youth and college students to not let this city break your mothers’ hearts. Prayers for the injured and for their loved ones and friends.

@laura begay If your solution is to remove all guns in the US then you are in fairy tale land and are probably riding unicorns to work. The govt is completely UNABLE to get any type of control over the weapons in the US (Mostly because WE WILL NOT COMPLY) and the criminals have guns too. You are free to hope and pray things get better - but lets be realistic, prayers and hopes are not going to protect you from a home invader or a mugging. Most criminals desire easy pickings and if they know you are armed are likely to think you are more trouble then you are worth.

@DaemonsRetribution

Pat Doyle what law will prevent it
@pdoylemi
4 жыл бұрын
@@DaemonsRetribution MUCH better gun control will prevent a lot of it. Not all of it, but no law ever stops every crime that it covers. So if your argument is that there may well still be mass shootings sometimes even with better laws, then you are likely correct. But then we might as well do away with ALL laws! Sex offender registries have done very little good, and damaged lives of basically innocent people. Such as a man who got arrested for indecent exposure and public urination, for peeing behind a dumpster near a bar. Since they added "indecent exposure" he has to register now, and just finding a place to live is hard to do. But countries with good gun control laws do not have these constant mass shooting and high homicide rates. And perhaps putting some teeth in gun laws would help. Most places, illegal possession of a firearm is punished either with fines of very short jail terms. I saw a documentary that showed a gang banger from Nashville who was busted 4 times in five years for carrying an unregistered handgun in 5 years and served a total of 9 months in County jail for those arrests. A couple of months in jail means nothing to these guys, but maybe the threat of 20 years in the federal pen might make them think twice. Or we could combine tough carry laws with interpreting the Constitution the way it seems it was meant to be. The 2nd Amendment lists "a well ordered militia" as the reason that "the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed". But people forget that the term "the people" can means as individuals, or as a whole. And article 1 section 8 describes what that militia would be - a force ARMED, trained and disciplined by CONGRESS, under the command of the state Governors and the officers the governors appoint. In other words, the collective people of the states have a right to be armed - not that every goober with a little extra cash should be allowed to buy/carry whatever he/she can afford. You know why we have not had any RPG attacks? Because people cannot "keep and bear" THOSE arms, and no one can sell them legally. Do you think the Vegas shooter would have hesitated to launch RPGs if he could have gotten them? Why not allow hunting rifles, that can ONLY be transported unloaded and in a locked case DURING hunting seasons, and perhaps handguns for home defense that cannot be taken out of the home or business they were purchased to defend? It is only since the NRA began to morph from the responsible group it was to a lobby for gun manufacturers (and now apparently a pawn of Russian intelligence) that this insane, absolutist position on guns has become mainstream.

I have visited NOLA during Thxgiving holidays for many years except this yr and last year. It was lot of fun watching the football game , battle of the bands. Also the pregame celebration near the Benz Dome. But I am not surprised that this has happened. The reason for me saying this is because of the gang fights in BOurbon street the night before the game. Sometimes i Have seen crowds of young people running for their lives. This was a real danger waiting to happen. These kinda people are killing their city and the economy. I applaud the police and they deserve our respect for putting their lives in danger to keep us safe.

YOU KNOW THERE IS NO PLACE TO HIDE in the French Quarter, right? Unless you have a door key or run in a public building, your next bad move is under a vehicle parked bumper to bumper along nearly every street. I got in a foot chase, well they were doing the chasing, but I outran two New Orleans’s detectives one Monday morning. I had just walked out of my apartment with a small travel bag and the little ordinary mid-size Ford Taurus from Snappy Car Rental out in New Orleans East was almost to the end of the street. I saw them but didn’t see them until I heard, “Excuse me, sir. New Orleans Police we need to talk to you.” I had just placed the bag in the back seat and still on the sidewalk, I turned around and closed the door and took off my shades as I faced them. I could not pick either out of them out of a line up because I just remember their shoes. I heard a New York detective could tell your whole life story by the shoes you had on your feet. Worn out, too cheap to buy a nice pair, middle of the road, about to retire that didn’t have a chance in hell of catching me in a footrace. One was trying to circle around me while reaching for his cuffs and in a moment now seared in stone in my mind, I jumped like a Standing Broad Jump, probably leaping ten or twelve feet out of their grasp, and sprinted like a Gazelle and was to the end of the street and around the corner onto Royal Street, right under the Original Royal Street Pharmacy sign, before they realized what happened. They gave it a valiant effort, but I wasn't going to jail that morning because I had something in my pocket I could not throw away or get caught with. As soon as I made the entire length of the block, a pedestrian stepped out of the Verde Mart, and turned right into me crossing Governor Nichols with two cops maybe 50 feet behind me, hollering, "Stop him," Stop him." I lived south of NOLA for a few years. I'm not used to being in a place where people are sober a few hours out of the day. Alcohol danger is not taught adequately. Rather alcohol it's glorified / trivialized in media and hollyweird.

There is a small chance you might defend yourself, but you are much more likely to have your weapon discharge accidentally, get stolen, or be used against you or other innocent people. Of course, if there weren't so many guns around, you wouldn't need to protect yourself with one.
