This is, I believe, going to remain one of the great masterworks of our time.

Typical New York Times thinking their commentary about Doctor Atomic is more important than the actual scenes they're purporting to show us. Maybe if they had shut up for a second, we would have actually been able to hear some of the scenes from Doctor Atomic the title says we're supposed to be watching.

@MoscowMaestro If you want to know, I think it's highly fallacious to believe connect the exclusion of Peter Sellars and Oppenheimer's actions as cause and effect. I highly doubt that the exclusion of Sellars was anything close to the reason you've suggested. It is quite possible that Sellars declined to direct.

I tried to listen to watch this opera in a video and, although I understand "opera" -- I was a professional singer int he past--, the music and the arias bother an educated ear, and this is not really a good theme for an opera. Better watch a movie or a documentary. Nothing romantic, nothing sticking in your mind as memorable from the musical point of view. And that round bomb looks so ridiculous!

The prop bomb used in this production closely resembles the actual bomb detonated at Trinity. It was round because the plutonium core was surrounded by a sphere of conventional explosives. See: rarehistoricalphotos.com/gadget-first-atomic-bomb/ . I can recommend "Wonders are Many", a PBS documentary of the San Francisco production of Dr. Atomic, incorporating lots of background information about the Manhattan Project. What do you mean, "bother an educated ear"?

"Educated ear"- how exclusionist. Just because it's different / not to your taste doesn't make it bad.
