I grew up in Elkhart from 1956 - 1973. Never realized they used to have streetcars downtown. Attended Samuel Strong, North Side, and one year at Elkhart HS. Only one HS back then.

There was some racial tension in Elkhart in the Spring of 1971. The whites were gathered on Main Street on one side of the tracks, and the blacks were gathered on the other side of the tracks and the police were in the middle.

I spent my summer vacations in Elkhart over 60 years ago. My Great Grandfather worked on the New York Central Railroad for 40 years, and all his immediate family could ride anywhere for free. I road all the way from Grand Central Station in New York when I was 7 years old. The conductors took good care of me. Elkhart was Paradise to a city boy like me! I was free ranging as long as I showed up for meals! Our doors were seldom locked! I still dream about it.

Sadly the days of when could leave our door unlocked ended in 1999 if not sooner. I personally have a love hate relationship with town now and I grew up here and was born here in 92

@@elzysweetenjr4821The last time I set foot in Elkhart was 1970. I had just hitchhiked all the way from San Francisco. I was 17, and I could see that Elkhart was already not the same town I so fondly remembered. My Great Grandparents had been put out of their home by the city, who then demolished it to make room for public housing . Even though I now live in Ohio, I have decided not to visit Elkhart. I'm 70 years old now, and I would like to hold on to those precious memories of Paradise Lost. I have looked up the Elkhart newspapers, and the stories read like something out of my birthplace, The South Bronx. Elkhart will always be my idea of Heaven, and I'd like to keep it that way!

Being born in 98, I never remember an Elkhart that felt safe enough to keep the doors unlocked. Downtown is an absolute catastrophe, especially at night. Crack, fentanyl, and methed out people have set up a small tent town by the river, multiple times a week needing police and medical support for someone whose overdosed. It's sad to see how far we've fallen

@@dr.traplord1227 This breaks my heart! I'm glad my Great Grandparents didn't live to see it. I have lived in Ohio for almost 20 years, but I have never had any desire to visit Elkhart. I have read it's newspapers online, and it sounds more like The South Bronx, where I grew up, than the small town paradise that I remember. I knew it was over when they tore down my Great Grandparents house to put up Public Housing. I'll keep my memories of Elkhart alive, and pray for it's rebirth. Unfortunately, this is the same story all over this country. We are witnessing the end of our greatness, and no one seems to have the will or the ability to put on the breaks. Greed, avarice, and dissention seem to be all we are good for now. It's a damn shame!

Where is the location of houses shown at 2:41? Looked at buying 1303 Greenleaf in September 2018 and wondered if it was in that area.
