English subtitles available - Ride with Schauinslandbahn (near Freiburg, Germany) to the upper station, views from above - Schauinslandbahn is located just south of Freiburg im Breisgau (federal state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany). It is the longest gondola lift in Germany. A gondola lift has a hauling cable, pulling the cabins, and it runs continuously between lower and upper station. (This is different from an aerial tramway, where 2 cabins run up and down alternating, coupled by the haulage cable. Examples of aerial tramways are Funivia Malcesine-Monte Baldo in Northern Italy or Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York, USA.)
The route is approx. 3500 meters long. The lower station is located close to the village of Bohrer near the municipality border of Freiburg, at 474 meters of height. The upper station is located 1220 meters above sea level. Operation of Schauinslandbahn started in 1930. So it is also the oldest gondola lift in Germany.
The route has 7 support towers and 1 device providing tension of the cable. There are 37 cabins. Up to 700 persons can be transported per hour and direction.
Schauinsland mountain is 1284 m high. From the upper station of the gondola lift it is approx. 800 meters to walk to the summit. When the weather is fine you have great views
e.g. of Feldberg and of the city of Freiburg.
When you are hiking from Schauinsland to Freiburg you can see the gondola lift several times during the first part of the trail.
