Loved the review. So here's what I have in my setup, I use a Macbook pro laptop with my cd's ripped. Output of mac is using the optical out at 192Khz to an SMSL Sasnkrit 10 dac to either a Magni 3 or my vintage Marantz 2230 receiver using OneOdio headphones. I did a blow out with Deoxit and Fader lube on both Marantz and Magni and was a huge difference. I'm tempted to go with an Asgard 3 or one of the THX amps as want some thing of modern vintage that compares to the Marantz. I should add, the Marantz ins not mine originally but got through a friend. to my ears at 62 years old, nothing beats the sound of this so I'm wondering how the new Magni's will stack up. The original Magni is good, but just kinda there in comparison to the Marantz . Loved the review and thanks

SMSL SP200 THX AAA 888, it's the cheapest of the 3 options available (Drop, SMSL, Monoprice) and it's got very nice power 6W per channel at 16ohm. Zeos has a good video comparing the Drop and SMSL. Personally and currently, I have the Schiit Magni Hersey, and planing on buying a set of planar cans (Argon's) so I'm kinda torn on buying the above mentioned SMSL or going for full recommend power needs and foregoing pure cleanliness for 9w per channel at 50ohm with an A-100....I know planars like power, and it's highly recommended that you give them 6-9w.

@@johnnygeorgopoulos4072 I'd really like the SMSL once my budget improves, sadly other priorities these days as I love the SMSL Sanskrit 10 as my first dac At least the SMSL is using the 888 output transistors as I think the 789 series is now old. My headphones are the OneOdio SP10 and sound amazing for the kind of money they cost . Also planar's once the budget improves. I replaced my Magni 3 with the Magni Heresy - which I only even considered doing after reading Amir's review on Audio Science Review - and I'm glad that I did. The Heresy is noticeably cleaner. The volume pot is physically smoother. There no distortion when raising or lowering the volume. And there's no discernible channel imbalance. And the Heresy is a bit more powerful. All-in-all, the Heresy does everything better than the Magni 3, while retaining the $100 price and conveniently small form factor.
@selbi182

There's channel imbalance in the 3? Dammit, I was going to buy it used now that it's cheaper.
@youdoitillwatch
4 жыл бұрын
@@selbi182 - That shouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker. At the lower price for a used (or even new, old stock), you're not going to find anything better. And the channel imbalance on my Magni 3 wasn't permanent, which is to say that it could be rectified by minute raising or lowering of the volume. Finally, it may have simply been a quality control issue, so as minor as the problem was it's entirely possible that you'd get a unit with less noticeable channel imbalance. If you have the extra cash I'd say to go ahead and get a Heresy or 3+, but if money is a bit tight then you shouldn't hesitate to get the Magni 3.
@Currawong

@@Currawong - Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if it was a quality control issue and whether I had been unlucky with my Magni 3 but lucky with my Heresy. It's even made beautifully and beautifully designed. The more spendy stuff has gotten incrementally/marginally better, while the lower/mid end of the market has gotten better in revolutionary jumps. Things have changed a lot in the last ten years, and even more notably in the last five or so. I tend to say this over and over, and it's because I'm enjoying so much how good things sound for the money today. Subscribed! Also, thanks for this whole video. I never knew how amps worked (as I'm not an engineer and never vested a major interest in them), but this explanation really helped me in understanding how these devices amplify and tweak the sound coming out of the audio devices you are using. Also, because of your explanation, I decided to go with the Heresy amp and am looking forward to the results. I have an old, old Topping TP21 amp which is "okay" when paired with some of my headphones (I don't have any super expensive ones, mainly the Bowers & Wilkins P7 and Bang & Olufsen H6 [2nd Gen]), but I saw that this old amp was only "meh" when compared to newer stuff out nowadays. Competent was probably not the best word for it. This is the result of my shooting videos unscripted. I bought a magni heresy and modi 3 stack for use with MrSpeakers Ether CX and Aeon Open. After listening for a week I sold my other more expensive DACs and Amps and doubled up on these. To me, very little reason to spend more. I put the money I saved towards a KEF LS50 and Cambridge CXA61 stereo.

Good Day, I know this vid is a bit older but in my area I have a choice of the Schiit stack, the iFi Zen Dac V2 and the Topping L30 E30 stack. I cant demo unfortunately and this will be my first dac amp for my computer for gaming and movies. What would be a good recommendation considering Ill probably want this to last a while and I will experiment with different headsets

Constructive criticism: maybe avoid treating as “silly” to want an in-depth comparison of two good $99 products. For a lot of people, $99 _is_ an investment, justifying to really seek out what gives the most value for the buck. In such a situation, this kind of comments can feel a bit harsh. Thanks for the review nonetheless. It was great. :)

Planars definitely have a higher power sensitivity, in that borderline or inadequate power is obvious and unforgiving. The power output of the Magne 3 is 410mw/300 ohms. That's quite powerful, especially for $100. The drop amp is only 185mw single ended.
@Currawong

300 Ohm headphones only need a very small amount of power -- the main thing that is required for them is adequate voltage swing. Nowadays, just about everything can do that adequately.

I have a Magni 3+ and when I turn the volume knob, I can hear some annoying noises (just like pink noise, and especially at high gain mode), but it disappears in just one or two seconds when I stop turning the volume knob. Is this normal? I am using Sennheiser HD660S.

Try turning the volume knob to max and min back and forth few dozen times. I had the same issue and this procedure helped reducing the noise almost completely

Why are you using a speaker amp to drive the Magni? How are you connecting it? You don't want another amp between your source and the Magni.

You need a separate DAC with USB input, like the Modi 3+. Or, get a Hel 2 (just released) and it has both the DAC and headphone amp in one box.

Thank you for the review. I am looking to get a decent set of headphones ( $200-$350) for some quality listening at home. The Beyerdynamic DT 880s or Drop Sennheiser 6XX are the two headphones I am leaning towards in the $200 range. I am considering the Sundaras at the top end. Do you think a Magni 3+ with an input from my MacBook Pro would do a decent job? Would it benefit me more to go with the $200 headphone and get the Magni 3+ and Modi? For reference I currently have AirPods Pro and a set of Bose QC35. I certainly understand what I currently have isn’t ideal for quality audio. However my QC35s and AirPods Pro are perfect pairing for me as I travel a lot and the AirPods are extremely convenient while offering decent audio quality considering the form factor.

Sundara worth getting. If you are looking to save money on dac and amps, you might want to look into hip-dac (not clean in measurement but drives them good with hint of warm tonality) for $150, though did notice they sound better when using balanced 4.4mm than 3.5mm output with it which will cost you about $50. So if you want to roam with sundaras a bit, consider hip-dac, if from desktop setup, consider both modi3+ and magni (any variant). You could order just amp and drive with output using 3.5 to rca but most headphone are limited to 1v-1.4V output and these amp need 2V input on RCA for most optimum performance. So you could get something like Tempotec Sonata HD Pro, but really recommend to step up to Modi3+ or topping e30.

I don't understand why do we need matched transistors in emitter follower with a deep general negative feedback. I think the idea was different. May be this is cheaper to solder one IC instead of two transistors.

@@Currawong That's awesome :) Hope in a week because that would be my max return window of Sp200, and i'm receiving AAA 789 by more than a months back, but in general i remember 789 sounded better, almost another league sounding, so i need to do pretty fast to decide or sell You're reviews are really great, even more for newbies like me, to have an expert talk like you in a practically and very comprehensive view, so i would like more SQ comparison in respect of those 99$ decice (Don't know how much here in EU, maybe 130€+ shipping), and maybe something like power supply performance/degradation as is not my competence, better feeding with XLR or RCA input if it have same power (Talking even for 789, i don't know if with, RCA in and balanced out it would have full 6W and - 120 crosstalk), etc.. Awesome! Continue like this!
