So powerful. By pure coincidence , I was in Poland ( Warsaw and Wroclaw ) in the first week of March 1993 when principal photography began in Krakow . I was shown a captured enemy tank that lay under snow in the grounds of the University where I was presenting some US weather sensing technology . To be so oblivious to the work that Spielberg and his crew were undertaking just a couple of hours drive away , gives me a bizarre sense of a guilt . As the snow fell in southern Poland that week , and my weather station was driven into the frozen soil ,it was so difficult to remove the mental image of what the victims at Auschwitz , just an hour away , could have endured fifty years earlier.

If you want to see very accurate videos about the holocaust including about Płaszów concentration camp search for cbuchko on KZitem, he's an American teacher who brings students on field trips and films the locations as teaching aids. It’s a popular song called adagio for strings by Samuel barber. It was popularly remixed when I was in high school by tiesto
The said gas chamber was originally an ammunition store at the Polish army barracks taken over by the nazis during the war. It was then converted to a trial/temporary gas chamber later it was used as an air raid shelter by the nazis and after the war was converted back into a (fake) gas chamber for the museum. Hope this clears things up.

The last location is wrong. The filmmakers were banned from filming in Oświęcim.

Brilliant thanks. Stayed in a hotel where that scene where the bloke is moving the luggage to clear a path for the SS. What a wonderful area to stay in with so much history. Of course the Plac Nowy area with those food windows and great bars. Stayed twice. Off to Warsaw in December. Thanks to this amazing film this area of Krakow is thriving again.,
