Hear from John Longhenry, longtime volunteer and board vice president for the Sand Bluff Bird Observatory, about their work and the goals for their new scholarships, awarded for the first time in CFNIL's 2024 scholarship season.
Sand Bluff Bird Observatory (sandbluff.org/) is located within the Colored Sands Forest Preserve (winnebagoforest.org/items/col...) in northwest Winnebago County, Illinois. Sand Bluff volunteers set nets to capture migrating birds, which are banded, counted, and released to continue on their journey. Since their founding in 1967 Sand Bluff volunteers have banded over 380,000.
In 2023, Sand Bluff board members established three scholarships, two of which are awarding for the first time in 2024. The Sand Bluff Bird Observatory Lee and Lynda Johnson Founders Scholarship and Sand Bluff Bird Observatory Dave Seal Volunteers Scholarship support students pursuing future environmental and conservation studies careers.
