You'll like the feel and the noise of the rear engine bus. Seems like a pretty good bus overall. I would have steered clear of a high mileage Mercedes engine, but with that low mileage you should be just fine.

Hey you two great videos as always. Not to tell you what to do on your bus for the build, but please avoid this YT trend of removing the front heater and defrost systems. Folks are making some kind of shelves or related in these spots. You are removing two primary sources of heat. The diesel air heaters are cracking the the windshields of the busses out here. Last I checked, $3200 for those two windshields new plus labor. Just a future heads up for ya. Also, your wire harness that goes from from front of bus to rear of bus, that supplies rear brake lights and everything else, is not weather rated., and will crack and fall apart in short time. If possible, build your bus around the wiring you have left. If splicing under bus, use new weather rated wire. Typically 7 wire 14 guage trailer wire is great. FYI

The flat nose is better for visibility, this is a BIG plus over a long nosed bus. I know nothing of Mercedes engines, but I do know a bit about the Cummins 6.7 litre. Hubby's pickup has a 6.7L Cummins and his old Semi tractor had a pre def Cummins engine. They are pricey, I want to cry every time we have to make repairs to hubby's truck, and that does include an engine swap. (Hubby's fault, not the engine.) 200k is peanuts for a Cummins, I think your old bus may have had an incident in its past. A hole in the block takes some doing. The engine we swapped was because Hubby blew the oil pump and then kept running it. The final give up on that 08 was noisey and frightening. Dropped an 09 from a wrecked tow truck into it. What you get for all that money is more power than you'll ever need, the best fuel mileage and longevity. Barring stupidity and other outside forces. I think I'll subscribe just to check out how that Mercedes will work out for you. The lack of nose is better, especially if you're new to driving bery large vehicles. You'll be fine with the extra length so long as you remember that big yeller butt is back there. That's how I learned to drive a 40ft vehicle. Back when they would rent them to people with only classC licenses. You'll definitely like having the extra space though.

Nice thing with a pusher engine is that, there is more weight on your rear end and you don't have to have as long of a drive shaft and run the risk of twisting or breaking a u joint on the drive shaft.

Federally, anything over 26,001 lb you need a class b minimum or a if you are towing a trailer that weighs over 10k. You can get non commercial class a license. Then you will not be in the federal dot drug test pool. I’ve been a class a driver since 2004 and it sucks I can’t smoke a blunt if I want.

Does that thing have a 6 speed? I know it’s a Allison transmission which in some cases is nicer for people who don’t know how to drive stick. But it is a freightliner so it’s probably gonna be better to get parts at a freightliner than a bus company dealer since the cluster is freight liner and the new Thomas buses are freightliner . Congratulations
@johnclamshellsp1969
Жыл бұрын
That model will have a Allision MD-3060 six speed. For the school busses only gears 1-5 are active. The reason 6 is locked out is because the engine is "de-rated" on full power. Gear 6 or lock up, would just bog it down. However, if they take the bus to a dealer, get the horsepower turned up ($400), have the Allision TCM removed and reprogrammed, they will be fine. Last I checked, Allision wanted $900 for the recode.
@johnclamshellsp1969

Anything coach portion is bus and easy to find. Anything truck (rolling chassies) will be Freightliner or whomever the builder was. All of those parts are "dime-a-dozen" common heavy truck parts. Easier to find than car parts.
